Medical errors resulting in serious injury and death are one of the most devastating tragedies a family can go through. The Topperwien family in New Zealand never thought it could happen to them until a nurse who was assigned to vaccinate their 6-week old son Chace told them:
“I’m sorry but I’ve actually given your son the wrong drug.”
As Chace’s parents stared at her in utter disbelief, she quickly added:
“I can give him the right one now.”
Chace was mistakenly injected with Gardasil, an HPV vaccine, which has been in the news for causing debilitating health injuries to teenage girls as young as 9-year-olds.
What he was scheduled to receive was the meningitis vaccine.
Sadly, what happened a few short years later would soon become a tragedy the likes of which no parent should ever experience.
Two years after the vaccination Chace was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer — acute myeloid leukemia. A year later, in summer 2012, the disease took Chace’s life.
Did the accidental Gardasil vaccination lead to the development of Chace’s deadly disease?
Chace’s parents say they never got real answers from the doctors who claim that Gardasil could not have caused cancer, but how would they know, the parents asked, if it has never been properly tested on 6-week-old boys.
“We just want to get some answers, we want some research done. They made the stuff-up and now, for…years, they’ve just swept it under the carpet,” told the parents to a New Zealand publication.
Chace originally had a rash on his neck, and his blood test results came back abnormal before he was given the dreaded leukemia diagnosis.
“I can’t even describe it. It was probably the worst possible outcome that we could have imagined,” an unnamed parent was quoted as saying in this blog post, acording to a now-deleted article in the New Zealand Herald.
“We thought it would just be a check, just to make sure everything was all right. It crossed our minds beforehand but we just thought ‘no, it definitely can’t be leukemia’.”
The parents took matters into their own hands and started researching. What they found raises a lot of concerns about the potential link to the Gardasil shot.
“It’s not a crazy theory,” Chace’s mother said. “We feel the development of [Chace’s] immune system has been interrupted and when he was diagnosed doctors said that the mutation of his cells had come about through a different pathway to the way leukemia normally develops.”
Gardasil and Other Vaccines Linked to a Blood Condition – A Symptom of Leukemia
Gardasil has been linked to cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a blood disorder that leads to bleeding and excessive bruising. It is also one of the symptoms for leukemia, and it is worth keeping an eye on for any parent whose child has been given this vaccine.
In the case of Chace, his parents began doing research on the side effects of Gardasil and found numerous cases of it causing ITP, which prevents blood clotting the way it should, a symptom of leukemia.
France has published a case of 16-year-old girl who developed ITP after receiving the second dose of the HPV vaccine. The doctors told her to not get the vaccine again.
Patients’ accounts also tell many stories of ITP diagnosis following a Gardasil injection.
As of now, there have been 928 reports of ITP following vaccinations, including the HPV vaccine, which accounts for about 18% of all cases. A total of 488, or over half of all cases happened to kids under three years old.
While ITP is considered to be a rare condition, this possible association with vaccinations, either causing or triggering it, is not something to ignore, especially for parents who have been forced to deal with the devastating harm that has been done to their children and still demand answers.
Gardasil has many other health risks to worry about as well, and while it is never (at least intentionally) administered to kids as young as Chace, children of older ages have also been injured by it.
Gardasil is Responsible for Many Vaccine Injuries
While developing cancer after Gardasil may be a rare story, as most kids are not accidentally injected with it at a younger age, this vaccine is linked to many types of potential injuries.
Gardasil has been associated with:
-chronic fatigue syndrome
-GI tract issues
-damaged nervous system
Gardasil has been called out by experts for using aggressive marketing techniques to push their vaccine for higher profits without proper warnings.
It has also been sued over and over again for destroying people’s heath and even been connected to few deaths. In 2008, there were 6,723 reported adverse reactions to Gardasil, of which 28 were said to be deaths.
All reported reactions (many are left unreported due to the passive and unadvertised nature of this reporting system) can be found on government-run Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) online, which arose after a 1986 court ruling shielding vaccine companies from lawsuits over cases of alleged harm.
Gardasil has been one of the most controversial vaccines out there – with exaggerated benefits and under-reported risks.
With many questioning, is it really worth the risk?
While every vaccine is different with a varying benefit-to-risk ratio, the vaccine debate rages on at least partly because, critics say, that the full effects of a vaccine on a human body have not been fully studied and understood.
And stories like Chace’s with potential links and many unanswered questions surrounding them, continue to raise even more awareness as to the potentially devastating side effects that are possible.
Vaccine companies and the governments that protect them continue to do everything in their power to minimize objections and to maintain the positive image of their products, through court rulings like the aforementioned 1986 one.
But for families like the Topperwiens, the continuous drumbeat that “vaccines are safe and worth the risks” does nothing to calm the nagging feeling that the death or serious injuries of their child could easily have been prevented, with more transparency and accountability from the companies they trusted with their child’s life.
For now, their questions remain unanswered, and the hurt remains.
