Product Review: A Healthier Alternative to Traditional Soy Sauce

Soy sauce is one of the staples of Asian restaurants, especially sushi joints, and many other popular eateries, and it’s one of the better-tasting and most versatile sauces out there in many ways.

Many people use it in their stir fries, on their rice, and in creating marinades and glazes. But as pointed out by several new school holistic health journalists, naturopaths and in books like ‘The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food,’ today’s soy, especially from the U.S., is far from the health food it was first marketed as being, and many people are starting to take notice.

Soy allergies are on the rise and more and more consumers are avoiding it, especially when it’s not organic. The Silk company caught a major backlash from consumers after it was purchased by Dean Foods and began quietly using conventional rather than organic soybeans without announcing it to customers, leading to deep mistrust of the brand and of big food takeovers of natural and organic brands.

If you’re going to eat soy, organic soybean products are a must, especially considering that conventional soy is processed with the neurotoxic hexane substance, and the vast majority of U.S. soy is now genetically modified, which brings with it a host of other problems.

Soy ultimately is best consumed in fermented and organic form, but where does that leave the consumer in search of a good soy-style sauce?

Perhaps they should look for a healthier alternative, and one of the best is the Raw Coconut Aminos product from Coconut Secret.

Coconut Secret: A Healthier Soy Sauce Alternative

While I’ve long given up soy sauce in all its forms, I still love the taste and had been looking for a quality alternative for a while. The Raw Coconut Aminos product is something I discovered after trying food bars from the Coconut Secret company, a lesser known outfit from the West Coast that has high standards and makes some incredible coconut based products ranging from coconut vinegar to nectar and even raw coconut ice cream.

All have been sensational so far, and the Raw Coconut Aminos is certainly one of the best. It’s got the same color and texture as soy sauce, a dark brownish-black color, and one of the most similar tastes of any alternative I’ve tried.

The flavor is light and sweet, kind of like a milder version of a typical soy sauce in my estimation, but it still goes great on rice or (preferably wild caught if you’re going to eat it, from a high quality, sustainable source) sushi.

Many friends of mine have been using Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, which is a soy-based product, and while Bragg’s is an excellent company and a hero for their donations to GMO labeling, I still prefer to avoid soy unless it’s fermented and organic, and even then only in moderation because of its estrogenic properties as a male.

Benefits of Coconut Aminos vs. Soy Sauce

The Coconut Aminos make for an excellent healthier alternative to that and other soy products in my estimation, however. The Coconut Aminos are made through the process of tapping a coconut tree creating a highly-nutrient-rich sap that includes 17 amino acids, minerals, vitamins and more, as much as 2-14 times as much overall as soy. The pH is nearly neutral as well.

The product is particularly enzyme-rich making it great for increasing absorption of the other nutrients from foods you eat, something many people have a problem with these days. It’s also blended with sea salt and can be used in all the same ways you would typically use soy sauce, making it a staple in my own recipes.

Coconut Secret's Coconut Aminos Product is a great soy sauce alternative and much healthier than most.

Coconut Secret’s Coconut Aminos

While it may be tough giving up some of our favorite products as health conscience consumers, we can learn to like new things that are similar without missing our favorites too much. Swapping traditional soy sauce for the Coconut Aminos, a healthier soy sauce alternative free from the possibility of GMO cross-contamination, is just one of the many ways I’ve been able to do that.

Note: This review was created after purchasing the product, a favorite of the author. Coconut Secret recently provided samples of its other products, however, which will be reviewed at a future date.
