Later this year another movie was supposed to come out that explores the potential link between vaccination and autism in children. It created more buzz than even the widely promoted “Trace Amounts” by Eric Gladen and was immediately censored by the corporate interest groups.
The documentary “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe” originally slated to be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival with the support of legendary actor Robert De Niro, who has a child with autism. Unfortunately, De Niro changed his mind after a vehemently dismissive, immediate and scathing reaction from the mainstream media and the corporate “scientific community.”
De Niro’s original statement of support read:
“Grace and I have a child with autism and we believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined. In the 15 years since the Tribeca Film Festival was founded, I have never asked for a film to be screened or gotten involved in the programming. However this is very personal to me and my family and I want there to be a discussion, which is why we will be screening VAXXED. I am not personally endorsing the film, nor am I anti-vaccination; I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue.”
Vaxxed explores the data potentially linking the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism, which was hidden until CDC Senior Scientist Dr. William Thompson came forward with the information in 2013. And in 2015 congressman Bill Posey spoke in front of the House of the Representatives asking for an official investigation.
Posey was the person to initially convince De Niro to keep supporting the movie even after the pressure to remove the movie from the festival. It is unclear what made De Niro pull the movie after all, but many have wondered how someone who was so confident in taking a stand for free speech by showing the movie could make such an abrupt about-face. Perhaps he was just concerned about his career after the unexpected wave of vitriol and intense pressure pointed at him.
His official statement reads:
“My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family. But after reviewing it over the past few days with the Tribeca Film Festival team and others from the scientific community, we do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.”
The question arises, who was that De Niro talked to before making his decision, and were specific threats involved?
(Some allegations arose that one of the interest groups that pressured De Niro was the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which is one of Tribeca Film Festial’s signature sponsors. The foundation is seen funding a large amount of vaccine research (a highly profitable field, especially because vaccine makers don’t have the liability issues that prescription drug makers do).
In a country where free speech is supposed to be celebrated and protected, and in an educated world where people are smart enough to make their own decisions, where we routinely watch movies with realistic scenes depicting and glorifying every type of violent act imaginable, why in the world is the establishment so terrified of a movie that merely presents information and questions about vaccines?
One of the reasons Vaxxed received so much controversy is due to its director Andrew Wakefield. Wakefield is a former doctor who lost his career by publishing a 1998 study of 12 children whose intestinal abnormalities as well as behavioral symptoms were identified to be associated with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations. (His story and take on his research in his own words can be read in “Callous Disregard: Autism and Vaccines–The Truth Behind a Tragedy.”)
The heavily corporate influenced medical community found the study to be flawed, calling the link coincidental. (However, here we are almost two decades later and the senior CDC Scientist Thompson himself tells us the the link is very plausible, but the documents proving it were purposefully “thrown into a garbage can.” Another case of censorship that the media almost completely ignored!
“I believe we intentionally withheld controversial findings…” stated Dr. Thompson.
One of the articles “debunking” the Wakefield’s findings was published in BMJ in 2011 after freelance journalist Brian Deer published a series to show that Wakefield’s research was a “fraud.”
The same year BMJ had to publish a correction to their article, which states:
“The BMJ should have declared competing interests in relation to this editorial…The BMJ Group receives advertising and sponsorship revenue from vaccine manufacturers, and specifically from Merck and GSK, which both manufacture MMR vaccines.”
Clearly there are conflicts of interest factoring in between Wakefield’s study, the BMJ journal, and Deer himself. (It is important to note that Deer was the main culprit for ending Wakefield’s career after his vaccine study was released).
In between all the allegations, the main question to ponder now in light of De Niro’s decision and the media firestorm that ensued is as follows — does censorship ever happen for the good of the society?
In America, one of the least healthy countries in modern history (with the highest medical expenses per person by far), where autism rates keep going up, cancer rates are going up, auto-immune illnesses, allergies, and several other chronic illnesses are going up at the same time as this country is pushing more and more vaccinations, is it really wise for us as a society to close our eyes and hide our heads in the sand over potential links?
It might take years for us to truly figure out the many possible causes of autism, but until then, nothing should be off the table. Correlation may not equal causation, but in the case of Wakefield and other studies,
And with the serious and life-threatening side-effects vaccines are proven to cause (to the tune of $3 billion in government payouts since 1986 for injuries), this discussion is far from over.
Until then, it is up to us to speak up and demand further research into vaccinations, and how to make them safe, because right now, there’s no question that they carry serious risks, especially for children and the elderly.
“It is our understanding that persons from an organization affiliated with the festival have made unspecified allegations against the film – claims that we were given no opportunity to challenge or redress. We were denied due process.
We have just witnessed yet another example of the power of corporate interests censoring free speech, art, and truth,” reads the official statement on the Vaxxed website.
