The polio vaccine is perhaps the most well known of all vaccines, credited with bringing about the end of the dreaded disease.
But few people realize that it is also capable of causing the disease itself, and it’s not
In 2015, there were 26 reported cases of vaccine derived polio, an infection caused by vaccines.
A NPR reported, “the number of children paralyzed by mutant strains of the polio vaccine are greater than the number of children paralyzed by polio itself.”
The reason for this occurrence lies with the oral vaccine. It is the most commonly used type of polio vaccine; it is also the cheapest — five times less expensive to manufacture compared to the inactivated virus vaccine. Unfortunately, the oral vaccine uses a live virus, which can and does mutate into a virulent form.
This dangerous mutated form of the virus is said to be responsible for the kids who are paralyzed by the vaccine. Their number is reported small, but also likely under-reported.
Vaccinated people can shed the mutated virus into communities for about two weeks, which may cause outbreaks.
“We have to stop using oral polio vaccine as soon as possible. As long as we’re using it, we’re introducing reverted strains into the environment,” said Vincent Racaniello, a Columbia professor of microbiology and immunology.
Mutated polio outbreaks have happened in Ukraine in 2015, and in Haiti and the Dominican Republic in 2000. According to one study, these outbreaks happen once or twice a year due to vaccines.
“It demonstrates clearly that the vaccine virus can spread from person to person,” says Olen Kew from the CDC.
The other kind of polio vaccine with inactivated virus has another danger; its risk is in the manufacturing process. If the virus gets spilled out in the lab, it can cause severe outbreaks.
These accidents do happen. In 2014, 45 liters of polio virus were spilled into the Belgium sewage system. The Netherlands then promptly issued a warning against eating fish from the river that got infected with this deadly spill.
The mainstream medical community’s answer to the vaccine problem is to introduce more vaccines to fight what vaccines have caused.
Major Issues with the Polio Vaccine
Besides the danger of creating mutated viruses, the active virus has also been known to live in a person for a long period of time, and the live virus sheds for as long as it is in a person. Usually it is active for two weeks, but there have been cases of it never leaving the person’s body at all.
One famous example is a British man who received three recommended doses of the weakened live polio virus and later a booster. His immune system was unable to get rid of the virus completely, and polio has lived in his intestines for the last 30 years. The virus that the man is shedding is a mutated, more dangerous form of polio.
This can happen to many individuals with weakened immune systems, such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions (which is about half of the population in the U.S., unfortunately). The jury concluded that the vaccine manufacturer did not disclose the risks of the vaccine to doctors.
In 1979, a man also contracted polio when he changed the diaper of his daughter and the polio strain passed through her intestines and infected the father. The man was left paralyzed and wheelchair bound. The family sued and received $22.5 million in compensation for a “unseasonably dangerous” vaccine.
In a similar case, former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia John H. Hager contracted polio and was wheelchair bound as well when infected from a live virus vaccine his son received:
“Hager has used a wheelchair since age 36, when he contracted polio from an oral vaccine that had been given to his 3-month old son.”
Since this threat, live polio has been removed from the market in the U.S., but not the rest of the world.
Yet, the inactivated-virus vaccine has similar risks. The injectable vaccine containing an inactivated virus uses formaldehyde to kill the virus. In the 1950s, when this was first done, the virus often looked inactivated when it was made, but in reality it was still a live virus. This has left many paralyzed in 1955 because of the vaccine.
Speaking of formaldehyde, it is just one of many controversial ingredients used in the polio vaccine that may be one of the causes for vaccine injuries [also read about ingredients in the flu shot].
The inactivated poliovirus vaccine is the U.S. uses the following:
Vero cells (kidney cells from the African green monkey), Eagle MEM modified medium, newborn calf serum, M-199 (without calf serum), 2-phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, neomycin, streptomycin, polymyxin B, calf bovine serum albumin.
Polio vaccine is also often combined with diphtheria and tetanus. This combined vaccine contains the following:
formaldehyde, gluteraldehyde, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum phosphate, lactalbumin hydrolysate, calf serum, Fenton medium (containing bovine extract), modified Latham medium (derived from bovine casein), modified Stainer-Scholte liquid medium, Vero cells, polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B, yeast protein, aluminum salts, sodium chloride, formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde has been linked to increased cancer risks. The additive 2-phenoxyethanol is known to cause eczema, auto-immune inflammation, and issues in the central nervous system. Neomycin is a drug used to fight bacterial infections, and can cause confusion, swelling, weak breathing, and severe stomach issues. Similar issues concern streptomycin, and polymyxin B; both are antibiotics.
Then we have gluteraldehyde, a disinfectant, linked to nausea, wheezing, and dizziness. Aluminum hydroxide and aluminum phosphate can add to accumulation of aluminium in the body leading to bone pain, muscle weakness, seizures, speech disorders, come and death.
The list goes on. This toxic cocktail of ingredients may be another reason for children being paralyzed by some polio vaccines, besides the virus itself being the first cause.
While the small number of paralysis cases were reported, many cases often go unreported, so the actual number of injured children in unknown.
“True patterns of vaccine injury can be hard to predict when 99% of occurrences go undocumented,” according to Focus for Health, an organization that promotes advocacy and research into chronic health conditions across the world.
Paralysis is also not the only possible side effect of the vaccine.
Vaccine injuries by a polio vaccine that were reported to VAERS are 578 cases just in 2016. Most cases remain unreported.
These vaccine injuries include blood disorders, life-threatening allergic reactions, musculoskeletal disorders, convulsions, headaches, and other disorders of the nervous system.
All of these can be looked up at MedAlerts.
While the polio vaccine will always be remembered because of its long-publicized history, it’s also important to note that there is far more information about the true risks of the vaccine that are woefully under-reported.
Make sure you do your research before deciding whether or not these and other potential side effects are worth the risk.
