There is nothing more alarming than when a young child starts to act up and to show aggression for seemingly no reason. When sudden behavioral changes happen, parents usually get kids into psychotherapy where they get medicated or counseled.
But as one psychiatrist reports, the first hurts the patients, and the second does not always work.
The cause of aggression, violence, and behavioral, and mental issues do not always come from psychological roots. Sometimes the cause is completely different.
A Brain Scan of A Young Boy Changed Everything
In 1995, psychiatrist Daniel Amen, M.D. got a call about his nine-year-old godson Andrew, who attacked a little girl on a baseball field. They never got into an argument; he had no particular reason to show aggression, yet he did.
The boy’s mother Sherry said: “He is different. He’s mean. He never smiles anymore. I went into his room today, and I found two pictures that he had drawn. One of them he’s hanging from a tree, the other he’s shooting other children.”
This was not like Andrew, and his mom immediately started to be afraid he’d be like Columbine or any other school shooters if nothing is done.
Dr. Amen immediately met up with Andrew the next day and asked him what was wrong.
Andrew answered,“I am mad all the time and I don’t know why.”
Dr. Amen went through all of the potential psychological scenarios that could cause anger but nothing came up. No one was hurting Andrew or bullying him in any way, not physical, mental, or emotional. His life was as normal as before, except his emotions were not.
His thought to himself: “Nine year olds do not attack people for no reason.” And he decided to do a brain scan on Andrew to take a look at what is going on.
If the scan was normal, that therapy could help. But the scan was not normal.
When it came back, it showed a giant cyst the size of a golf ball in place of his left temporal lobe—the part of the brain responsible for violence when issues occur.
Dr. Amen immediately wanted to find a surgeon to remove the cyst but none agreed because by definition Andrew did not show any “real symptoms.” They were waiting for seizures and loss of consciousness.
Dr. Amen was livid.
He said, “Let me see if I got this right. I have a homicidal, suicidal boy. What are you waiting for?”
He did not give up until he found someone who would remove the cyst.
Dr. Jorge Lazareff at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)—who later became famous for separating Guatemalan twins conjoined at the head—immediately agreed to do the surgery.
His professional opinion was: “Whenever cysts are symptomatic, and [Andrew] is obviously symptomatic, we’ll take it out.”
The surgery went really well, and right after Andrew woke up, he smiled—and he had not smiled for a whole year.
Dr. Lazareff confirmed the surgery to be a big success and also said that the cyst they removed was so aggressive that it made the skull eggshell thin on that side. It also put a lot of pressure on the brain.
This case completely changed how Dr. Amen looks at behavioral and mental problems. He says in cases like Andrew’s medication would never work but only hurt the patient. Yet in 999 out of 1000 cases a brain scan is never done.
“How do you know if you don’t look?” he said. “If you don’t look, you hurt people. And that’s not fair.”
There was no explanation to 9-year-old Andrew's violent behavior until his uncle, Dr. Daniel Amen, was able to use a groundbreaking discovery to change Andrew's life.Editing: Illumeably

New Approach: Changing The Person’s Brain
Not every psychological issue is psychological, sometimes it is a symptom of a physical issue. After Andrew’s recovery, Dr. Amen has decided to spend his life trying helping people like him.
“The single most important lesson I’ve learned from 87,000 scans is you can literally change people’s brains and when you do you change their lives,” he said.
Today, he runs the Amen Clinics that treat psychological and behavioral disorders using coaching, psychotherapy, and many holistic approaches including:
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to facilitate healing using oxygen.
Functional Medicine to find the root causes of the problem.
IV Nutrients Therapy to deliver high nutrients directly into the bloodstream.
Ketamine Injection Therapy for depression, bipolar, and PTSD.
Microcurrent Therapy to fight inflammation.
Nurofeedback to retrain the brain.
Nutrition and supplements
QEEG Diagnostics to find out how well the brain is communicating.
The clinic has locations in Atlanta, California, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and Washington state.
Before making an appointment, you can take two free online tests that will make you understand your brain better and give you recommendations on how to improve it.
