The dreaded chickenpox disease is pretty common in the United States, resulting in lost days at work and school, and in some cases, far worse outcomes. Itchy red spots all over the body are the hallmark of the disease, which seems to affect just about everyone at some point.
According to the CDC, there are about 100 deaths from the chickenpox disease each year along with over 3.5 million cases and 9,000 hospitalizations. The disease is caused by the varicella zoster virus which is part of the herpes virus family and also causes shingles in adults.
Of course, most people don’t get chickenpox more than once because our bodies create antibodies against the disease after the first time it’s contracted.
That’s what happened in my case: I got it once when I was in grade school and since then it’s been smooth sailing.
While the CDC attributes a drop in overall cases from 4 million to the current 3.5 million number to new vaccines, there are still many questions about its effectiveness and safety (check out this article for more), and many people don’t realize they have legal rights to refuse taking it if they so choose.
More Parents Turning to Home Remedies
Because of vaccine concerns, more parents are turning to home remedies and other unique ways to prevent the disease.
Some have even begun hosting old-school “chickenpox parties” where a group of kids or others will get together and contract the disease from each other in order to “get it out of the way” together so that the body will create those aforementioned antibodies to fight the virus later in life.
In addition to this approach, there are home remedies that can be used in order to slow down the virus or even stop it in its tracks.
The following is a home remedy using essential oils for chickenpox to try the next time you or a friend contracts the disease (note that this is for informational purposes only and not a substitute for medical advice):
Chickenpox Remedy Ingredients
Lavender Oil (10 drops)
Roman Chamomile Oil (10 drops)
4 oz. Calamine Lotion (Make sure it’s all-natural and doesn’t include harmful additives or fillers)
Instructions: Combine these three ingredients into a paste and then apply onto the affected areas and the rest of the body twice per day. You can also take a bath with 1 drop of either of these two oils per quart of warm water for an alternative, or extra effectiveness.
