Stress is often overlooked as a disease-causing factor in the mainstream medical culture, but mitigating and relieving it at the roots is the core focus of Dr. Jared Young’s California-based practice, Triad Wellness.

Dr. Young is a chiropractor who is also an active supporter of children’s physical, mental and financial health in El Salvador, through several different initiatives and services he hopes to expand across the world in upcoming years.

Recently, Dr. Young sat down for an interview with AltHealthWorks.com to discuss his unique approach to wellness, including the myriad ways he helps his patients tackle stress, how he’s helped his clients heal naturally through holistic methods, and much more.

NM: Hello Jared and thank you for joining us. What’s the name of your wellness practice and where is it located?

JY: The name is Triad Wellness. The name Triad comes from the philosophy that stress has three types: thoughts, toxins and trauma, and that all disease is born from the chronic press of stress that’s caused by these three.

So my clinical philosophy is, if we can manage how our body responds to those stressors, while also recognizing that some stress can be good stress that keeps us alive and makes life interesting….What we’re recognizing is that we really don’t want to get rid of stress in our lives, what we want to do is manage life more appropriately.

We teach clients how to manage, and aspects you can use to take control of and manage them.

We’re located in Fountain Valley, California, between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

NM: Can you tell us more about the these stressors, how you decided to classify them and how you can control them?

JY: For some reason, things happen in threes in my head.

When you have these stressors, your jaw will tense up, your shoulders will rise up, you’ll be breathing fast and shallow. But these are three things you can consciously reverse.

You can reverse that stress response in your body through breathing; when you stop one of those you can relax your body and get out of the fight-or-flight state. So it’s about re-training breathing patterns.

Also, we’ve been using CBD oil the last six months and it has a really amazing effect, the product I use. People take it and I can see their shoulders drop, they relax, their breathing slows down.

When I train patients to be conscious of those things, they can manage their stress a lot easier.

Understanding the relationship between breath and stress is the first thing.

When you’re breathing fast and shallow, you get that kind of out-of-breath feeling, the stress response. You can take control of that through diaphragmatic breathing, the way we are anatomically designed to breathe but we don’t because we sit so much.

NM: How would you implement these techniques among, say, people in a regular 9-to-5 corporate job who don’t always have the best posture and are heavily stressed throughout the day?

JY: In a corporate setting, I say, look at your partner and breathe. Sit here, drop your shoulders down, and expand your ribs into that tension. That expansion is the diaphragm pushing out on the ribs.

You blow all your air out and decompress right there, release it and get the spring action of the diaphragm going so you can feel it.

Sometimes a person will be stuck in a sitting job they hate, or a stressful relationship.

What we are recognizing is that you want to be eliminating as many negative stressors in your life as possible, but at the same time, sometimes even being married to the right person can be stressful, having kids can be stressful, your job can be stressful.

Learning how to breathe where you use your breath as a stress management tool, in my mind is the most important exercise that anybody can do. It’s all about getting their diaphragm to where they’re breathing.

NM: What are some of the more noteworthy health transformations you’ve seen over the course of your career working with patients?

JY: Disc herniations; I have some good stories about people.

One patient had a 17 millimeter disc bulge. If you know anything about disc bulges that’s three times as big as a really big one. It was a ridiculous rupture of the disc.

After about a month of therapy, they were surfing again pain-free with no surgery and no painkillers, and they’re surfing 4-5 times a week now.

We’ve had a lot of people with knee issues. The knees, it’s interesting because breathing in the diaphragm will actually reduce knee pain alone.

Just getting to the diaphragm, the core of the core, the center of everything.

If you get that engaged and the core stabilized there is less transfer of force through the entire chain. Usually, knee pain can be helped through improving core stability into their hips.

We had one patient, a 65-year-old woman about 5-foot-10 who weighed about 120 pounds.

She was told she needed both knees replaced. After her breathing improved so did her postural pattern, which strengthened her legs. Two orthopedic surgeons said she needed both knees replaced, but they went through the x-rays and she didn’t need it anymore.

Now she leg presses about 615 pounds with two bad knees.

Breathing has profound health implications. We’ve had Type 2 diabetics come in changing how they move, breathe and eat and after a couple months they are no longer on insulin!

It’s the same thing with hypertensive patients, people with high blood pressure. We change the stress response, improve the breathing and moving and it goes down. Nutrition is a big piece of it.

Five vegetables, three fruits, three meats, two handfuls of nuts and seeds and a gallon of water a day is what we recommend. Anything on top of that is fine; that’s just our blanket nutrition recommendation.

It’s about knocking down the toxicity of the food, getting rid of high processed sugar and flour content. After doing this, inflammation goes down, stress goes down and people get better.

Throwing in CBD oil in the last six months has also been a real game changer. It’s giving people relief.

Five minutes before I got on this call, a patient was 8 out of 10 on the pain scale. We gave her CBD oil with a few other phytocannabinoids in it; no THC.

She took it and walked down the back of my office, 20 meters long, halfway, and came back and said, “Doc, what is in this stuff?”

She went from an 8 to a 2 or a 3 in about 30 seconds.

It’s a real game changer for me and what I do. It helps to reduce that pain so I can move things better. The body is more receptive to corrections that need to be made.

NM: It looks like your facility is way different than a traditional doctor’s office. Can you describe the difference in how you operate?

JY: We offer whole body help.

When a patient comes in you have a waiting room, but nobody waits. They exercise, use the massage bed. The therapy happens even just walking in and waiting to be seen by me.

A typical medical doctor comes in to help manage medications, but we’re getting people healthier.

We want to down regulate the amounts of medication you’re taking.

You don’t want to stop cold turkey, but you can manage it down because organ systems will break faster if there’s high pressure going forward.

We are about improving the function of the body and stress management, which helps the blood pressure to go down. If you’re still taking it that becomes a stressor and toxicity starts breaking stuff.

The need eventually goes down hopefully to a place where they don’t need any medications, because we are a wellness clinic as opposed to just a doctor’s office.

If you go to a typical doctor, a medical doctor, you go sit in a waiting room and maybe after a few minutes of describing symptoms they’ll give you a prescription because they have to go see the next patient.

There’s very little room to even talk about lifestyle management. If they do have time, it’s a sheet of paper with exercises on it and nutrition recommendations. But the reality is, most people don’t have the discipline or ability to do those things at home off of a sheet of paper.

One conversation, the support of the community and the environment; not only being told what to do but shown what to do, and supported in how to do it, that really makes a big difference.

NM: Thank you so much for sharing. Can you tell us about the different projects you’re working on internationally as well?

JY: We have our Triad Fit Kids program in El Salvador, which is structured to be a global initiative. We’re taking this concept, this foundational idea on the three types of stress being detrimental to health.

Our goal is to down regulate that as much as possible and manage it in kids.

We’re doing a lot to promote health in kids in an El Salvador village.

We started out by helping get the kids to school, now the project has grown. We’ve set up a wellness clinic in the village with 100 families, to teach the things I do in my clinic, to get the people off their medications.

We’ve built an aquaponics farm with fish, fruits and vegetables to help people eat properly and healthfully to get off their medications. We work with doctors around the world who use telemedicine to provide clinical support.

This is the same technology where the kids not only just learn on the Internet but actually do business, for 5-10 hours online so they can make money and don’t have to leave their town to support their families.
