New European Report Exposes Failed Promises of GMO Crops

20 year fail

The mainstream media has been silent about what’s happening in Europe as 19 countries have officially banned the cultivation of Monsanto’s GMOs, and now a new Greenpeace report is shedding light on many of the reasons why these countries are so reluctant to allow such crops.

“Over the past 20 years, GM technology has only been taken up by a handful of countries for a handful of crops, so no wonder two thirds of Europe have decided to ban it. Where GM crops are grown, they lead to increased pesticide use and the entrenchment of industrial farming systems that in turn exacerbate hunger, malnutrition and climate change,” said Greenpeace EU Food Policy Director Franziska Achterberg according to the website Sustainable Pulse.

While Monsanto would have people believe that GMO crops are being enthusiastically adopted across the world, the truth is that most are confined to a small number of countries (85 percent are grown in just four countries) and most of the world is very hesitant to adopt them due to environmental, health and other concerns.

The Problems With GMOs

As mentioned in the report, GMOs have not lived up to their promises in several different ways.

The report, titled ’20 Years of Failure,’ highlights the following issues with GMOs:

Increased Pesticide Use- These crops are either engineered to produce their own pesticide within the plant or to resist large sprayings of pesticides. Farmers are forced to use more and more chemicals as pests and weeds adapt.

GMOs Won’t Feed the World- Contrary to what the Monsanto PR department says, GMO crops do not increase yields and threaten food security by taking the power away from small scale farmers.

No Safety Consensus- We already know that Roundup is a probable human carcinogen, and it is being sprayed liberally on many GMO crops. But most people do not know there are hundreds and hundreds of independent scientists and studies that strongly question the claim that GMOs have been proven safe.

Because these scientists don’t have the backing of the mainstream media or Biotech money they are not as well publicized.
