After One Week of Eating Organic, You May Notice THESE Changes in Your Body

The chemical glyphosate has been hotly debated for decades as to whether it is actually as safe as governmental organizations say it is, especially considering it’s the most widely-used herbicide in the world.

Despite its popularity and government safety approvals across the world, glyphosate was deemed a “probable human carcinogen” by the top cancer research body of the World Health Organization, the IARC, in spring 2015.

The chemical was also said by over 100,000 people to have caused their cancer in a lawsuit that was settled out of court by Bayer (formerly Monsanto) for nearly $10 billion dollars.

Glyphosate is omnipresent in our environment, food, air and even water, but the good news is that there’s at least one major way that we can prevent it from taking root in our bodily tissues and systems: to eat organic, even if only for one week at a time.

Switching to an Organic Diet Drastically Reduces Glyphosate Levels

According to a new peer-reviewed study published Tuesday in the journal Environmental Research, the levels of glyphosate in people’s bodies dropped by an average of 70% after just six days of eating an organic diet.

The study is one of the first to examine how this type of diet affects exposure to glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup, the best-selling weedkiller product first created by Monsanto and now made and distributed by Bayer.

Researchers also found over the course of the study that eating “conventional” food, much of which contains glyphosate residues, is the primary way people are exposed to this controversial, and potentially cancer-causing chemical.

Urine samples from four racially and geographically diverse families were collected by the researchers for five days on a completely non-organic diet and for five days on a completely organic diet.

In total, 16 participants were studied and a total of 158 urine samples were measured.

The study was undertaken by researchers from Commonweal Institute, a holistic health center in California, Friends of the Earth, a pro-organic organization in San Francisco, and Health Research Institute Laboratories, which says it is “an independent non-profit laboratory and science organization” that tests for glyphosate, antibiotics, and hormones in food samples.

Switching to Organic Causes Glyphosate Levels to Plummet Just Three Days

Perhaps most striking about the study is the short length of time in which it took participants’ glyphosate levels began to plummet within their bodies.

“The reduction was rapid, reaching baseline in three days,” the study, which can be read in full here, states.

“It’s striking that levels of this toxic pesticide dropped so dramatically after less than a week.

“Given our results and related studies on how an organic diet rapidly reduces pesticide exposure, we could expect to see similar reductions in glyphosate levels in most Americans if they switched to an organic diet,” said study co-author Kendra Klein, PhD, senior staff scientist at Friends of the Earth, a pro-organic environmental organization.

“That’s the good news. The bad news is that most of us are eating glyphosate-laden food continuously, resulting in daily doses of the chemical from breakfast through dinner.”

The study measured levels of both glyphosate and its main metabolite, AMPA (aminomethyl phosphonic acid).

Mean urinary glyphosate levels for all subjects decreased 70.93%, while mean AMPA levels decreased by 76.71% within six days on an organic diet.

While there is still much research to be done in this area, particularly on a larger group of subjects, the researchers concluded that switching to organic is an excellent way to decrease levels of the controversial, cancer-linked chemical in the human bloodstream in a relatively short amount of time.

“This research adds to a growing body of literature indicating that an organic diet may reduce exposure to a range of pesticides in children and adults,” the study’s conclusion reads.

America’s Organic Farmers Are Being Hung Out to Dry, National Coalition Says

Despite the good news on organic food, there is still much work to in order to make it affordable to the masses, not to mention profitable for organic farmers, according to a recent action alert released by the National Organic Coalition.

According to the Coalition, organic farmers’ reimbursement fees for certification have fallen by 25 percent according to a new USDA ruling, while struggling organic farms have been largely excluded from government pandemic relief programs, considerable funds going to the top 1 percent of recipients.

Organic farmers are facing an uphill battle, making it more important than ever to support them at the cash register, especially in light of this new information.

“This unilateral action by USDA is unwarranted and completely unacceptable and disregards the Congressional funding directives in the 2018 Farm Bill,” the Coalition wrote in a sample letter constituents can send to their congressperson, which can be read here.

“If the USDA wants organic farms and our regional economies to survive and thrive, they should be helping organic operations during the pandemic. Producers and other organic operations need this support now more than ever because they are faced with loss of markets due to COVID-19 and increasing costs as they modify their operations to keep workers and customers safe and implement new sanitation and staffing procedures.”
