More and More People are Removing Fluoride from their Personal Water Supplies: Here’s Why

More and more people are waking up to the health risks of fluoride in their water, and for good reason: fluoride is a cumulative toxin that has been linked to a higher risk of cancer, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg with the potential problems caused by the chemical added to our water supplies. A recent study from Harvard also found that fluoride may be capable of reducing the IQ of schoolchildren, as noted in this article. The good news is that more and more cities and counties are finally starting to reverse the trend of adding industrialized fluoride to the local water supplies, and more and more people are starting to buy fluoride-filtering water bottles to remove it. But the bad news is that fluoride is still omnipresent in most American cities, even though much of Europe has banned it. And that’s a trend we see unfold across the health spectrum, really: if it’s allowed in America, whether you’re talking about chemicals in cosmetics or genetically modified strains of corn, it’s probably banned in Europe, where the populations tend to be much healthier by all accounts. One of the biggest misconceptions about fluoride is that the naturally-occurring version is the same as the industrial chemical byproducts added to our water system. It’s so persistent that even my dentist recently showed that he didn’t quite understand the issue. Fluoride is used extensively in the dental profession for cleaning teeth, from toothpastes to fluoride mouthwashes to treatments designed to provide a deep cleaning.  Recently a new dentist I went to in order to get a tooth adjustment procedure spoke to me about how kids in a high altitude area in Colorado have better teeth, “because they have more fluoride in their water,” he said. The difference between mineral-rich, mountain-area Colorado water and fluoridated city water is pronounced, however: one is natural and the other is a chemical that has been linked to the above maladies, as well as several others. According to the website FluorideAlert.org, Dr. John Doull, the chairman of the National Academy of Science’s review on fluoride, created a committee that produced a 500-page report on fluoride. The committee found that it is an “endocrine disruptor” and can harm the bones, brain, thyroid gland, pineal gland and even affect blood sugar levels. While the American Dental Association and some other large interests still defend the use of chemical fluoride in the water supply, more and more people are deciding the risks are not worth it and taking matters into their own hands by buying filtered water and using water filters designed to remove fluoride. The issue has been a hotly contested one, but one thing’s for sure: the will of the people, and the truth, will win out in the end.  A Message From the Founder Have you figured out what not to eat, but still have no idea what you actually should eat in order to truly THRIVE in this lifetime?
