Fight Magnesium Deficiency for Better Total Body Health

While calcium gets most of the headlines and the attention of the medical community, along with advertising campaigns for supplements and the focus of consumers’ attention, magnesium languishes below the surface as a far-less appreciated mineral and supplement.

What many people don’t realize is that the calcium to magnesium ratio in America is very much out of whack considering how much emphasis is placed on the former, and could be leading to many health problems among the population.

Magnesium helps with the absorption of calcium, and high intake of calcium without enough magnesium could lead to many problems. The U.S. ratio is 3.5 to 1 in favor of calcium or perhaps much higher, while optimal levels should be about 1 to 1 according to Dr. Carolyn Dean in an article on

Among the conditions that could be caused by magnesium deficiency according to the article are: Asthma, Blood clots, Bowel disease, Migraines, Nerve problems, Insomnia, Kidney Disease, Fatigue, Heart Disease, Osteoporosis (Meaning you may need magnesium as much or more than calcium to prevent this, especially women!), Migraines, Kidney disease, excess stress and much more.

There are many ways to get more magnesium in your diet, but choosing a high quality supplement or eating more organic green vegetables is usually a good way to go.



My Own Magnesium Deficiency: Fixing My Eye Twitch

While I consider myself as a healthy eater known for buying at least 90% organic produce, drinking green smoothies and avoiding refined sugar as much as possible, I recently began to suspect magnesium deficiency.

My eyes had begun twitching after many hours of computer use each day, and fatigue had set in even on days when I was getting eight or more hours of sleep among other minor issues.  Stress seemed to be a major issue while writing far too much for this website and my full-time job, along with other commitments.

I asked a friend what type of supplement I may be missing and he suggested magnesium after telling me that he tested out as being deficient despite his own healthy diet, which I would categorize as slightly better than mine. That surprised me, considering all of the organic vegetables he ate as well.

I began to supplement with magnesium using concentrated magnesium sprays I received as a free gift with purchase of my shower filter from Omica Organics, while also religiously drinking a tablespoon of the wonderful Natural Calm magnesium powder, a tasty, effervescent supplement product, in my glass bottle filled with filtered water each day.

The results were definitely noticeable and came fairly quickly. I began to feel much more relaxed and invigorated after a week or so and my eye twitch had finally calmed down. But after cutting back on my supplementation habits, the twitch came back and I had a few more bouts with fatigue and surprisingly levels of stress before getting back on the schedule.

If you suspect you have magnesium deficiency, visit a naturopathic doctor and see if you can get your levels tested. The side effects of magnesium deficiency are too many to list here and the benefits of the mineral speak for themselves.

As demonstrated by the stories of my friend and I, eating a diet rich in organic vegetables, nuts and seeds may not always be enough, especially considering the diminished soil quality of U.S. farms, especially when it comes to “conventional” crops.
