5 Affordable Superfoods You Should be Eating Every Day

Many people today believe that a healthier diet filled with fruits and vegetables is much more expensive than the typical diet of refined and fast foods that many Americans have become accustomed to. While a few studies in the past have shown that eating healthier can cost more, other research has found that a healthier diet is also much more filling and rich in nutrients, meaning that we may be saving money after all.

If you’re looking to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle but don’t know what foods to start with, these five supermarket finds are some of the best things you can include in your diet and that you can eat every single day in different ways.

Olive Oil

Fat in food has turned into a controversial word that immediately brings to mind weight gain and unhealthy eating. However, there are so many good fats that are incredibly beneficial for you, just like olive oil. Olive oil is rich in beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants that are anti-inflammatory and protect against bad cholesterol.

It’s also been seen that areas with diets heavy in olive oil like the Mediterranean diet are less likely to die from heart diseases. Drizzle olive oil over different dishes or use it to cook and fry your meals.

Ginger

Ginger has long been used for common problems like indigestion or nausea, but it also contains a handful of other benefits and has been proven to lower blood sugar levels, be anti-inflammatory, and may fight against some cancers.

Ginger can be included in a variety of dishes and drinks, so you can mix it into tea, homemade fruit juices, soup, fried or baked foods, and even more.

Dark Leafy Greens

Leafy green vegetables are essential in any diet and are incredibly easy to find and incorporate into your meals. Eating an assortment of these vegetables can fight against obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and mental decline.

Include greens like cabbage, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, and bok choy into various home dishes for extra flavor and nutrition.

Eggs

The reputation of eggs has been mixed for quite some time, with some saying that they’re good for you while others tout that they’re filled with unhealthy cholesterol.

In fact, eggs are filled with HDL cholesterol otherwise known as “good” cholesterol, which can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Eggs are incredibly affordable, very nutritional, can be cooked in numerous ways, and be included with various meals.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great high-fat, low-calorie alternative to munch on as opposed to chips and other unhealthy snacks. They’re a great source of protein, fiber, magnesium, and more, and when eaten in moderation, have been shown to lower cholesterol, improve blood sugar levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke

Nuts and seeds like almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, and sesame seeds, among many others, can be included in your diet as healthy snacks or mixed into salads and fruit bowls.

Final Note

Superfoods are easy to find and packed with nutritional value, and are incredibly important to living a healthy life with lowered risk of disease. While these superfoods can easily be found in supermarkets and in most kitchens, you can also turn to superfood powders that provide all these benefits in a more convenient and compact form that you can have daily.
