Non-GMO Going Mainstream as Hershey’s Pledges to Remove Them from Some of its Favorite Products

For several years after the introduction of GMOs, millions consumed them without even knowing, their health suffering in the process as companies like Monsanto profited handsomely.

But now that the cat is out of the bag, those same consumers are rejecting foods containing GMOs in droves, so much so in fact that some of Americas biggest and well known food giants are reformulating their products to avoid suffering the same fate as McDonald‘s and other food giants with plummeting sales.

Hershey‘s Top Products Going GMO Free

According to a report from the website Food Navigator, the Pennsylvania based chocolate giant is planning to reformulate its milk chocolate and Kisses recipes to be non-GMO by the end of 2015 while also removing several artificial ingredients.

It will also strive to source its milk from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones, although the company did not say whether the milk will be from cows that were not fed GMOs (this is extremely unlikely unless they decided to use milk from outside the United States at this point).

Among the ingredients being removed are synthetic colors, flavors, high fructose corn syrup and the emulsifier polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR). To see the full details of what is being removed check out the Food Navigator article here.

Consumers, Activists Win in the End

While some companies have chosen to run and hide when activists have come calling, Hershey’s appears to have been at least partially impacted by a campaign from the Facebook page GMO Inside, which took them to task for their use of GMOs without labels in the U.S. along with their opposition to labels.

Hershey’s has said that its candies will cost more to make but consumer prices will likely stay the same. The transition will take time, it added, but updates on progress will be given along the way.

Will you buy Hershey’s again after they go non-GMO or do are they too big and have too much of a checkered past to trust at this point? Let us know in the comments section and don’t forget you can subscribe for more updates in your inbox like these by clicking here
