An Eco-Friendly Natural Alternative to Plastic Toothbrushes: Bamboo Brushes

There are many examples of the pervasive and environmentally destructive nature of plastic all around us in our daily lives, and they can often come from the most unexpected and simple sources.

The overuse of plastic toothbrushes is certainly one of them, as I realized recently when a friend told me a story about just how bad the problem is these days.

He was walking down a beach in beautiful, pristine Costa Rica, the getaway spot where there’s no need for a military by order of the constitution.

Suddenly he came across dozens and dozens of plastic toothbrushes, washed ashore in a large group in a place where the worst parts of civilization had been otherwise hidden entirely from view.

Plastic is not only creating eyesores in places like these, but it’s also creating huge “dead zones” in the largest oceans and other bodies of water because of how often it’s used, and of course, how often it is simply thrown out without thought.

For just about every plastic product we use and overuse, there is another solution, however.

Natural toothbrushes that don’t use plastic are a good place to start and an easy change we can all make, which is why I recently began brushing with a brush from the Brush with Bamboo Company.

I remember laughing as a kid when my aunt showed me a “hillbilly toothbrush,” a crude wooden brush that had been made simply and easily and used by a relative of her husband.

I thought it was crude and ugly, but now that I see things differently I wish I had grown up using them. It’s frightening how much plastic I’ve probably deposited into our ecosystem, causing who knows how much damage.

One area where I’m cutting back is with the new natural bamboo toothbrush.

Consider some of the important reasons to make a change (from the brush’s website):

-Over 2 billion plastic brushes will reach landfills each year

-The brushes take over 1,000 years to degrade

-Over 50 million pounds of brushes enter U.S. landfills

-The numbers are likely to increase as more populations adopt plastic versions

Switching to a Bamboo Toothbrush

I’ve always been one of those people who’s a bit sensitive to the texture of wooden popsicles and other similar items, but I love the Brush with Bamboo brush simply because I feel better using it than I do using another plastic brush.

The Brush with Bamboo brand has a lot going for it, and while it’s a little bit more expensive than a typical brush it is far better for the environment and even will help reduce your own exposure to BPA and other chemicals that come along with plastic.

The founder of the website Healthy Wild and Free recently wrote about making the same switch, and it has inspired me to do so as well.

The following benefits are offered by the Brush with Bamboo natural toothbrush:

-Compostable brush handle

-Biodegradable packing

-A sleek, natural look and feel

-BPA-free bristles

-The ability to remove the bristles for recycling if desired

While switching to a natural toothbrush may seem like a small change, the stats above show that we could all make a big difference if we each committed to doing things a better way.

And as America goes, the rest of the world will likely go. It is for those reasons that I have chosen to support the Brush with Bamboo company, because I can see that they are a company that is truly committed to making a difference.

So far I’m definitely enjoying my brush on multiple levels. The piece of mind you get from doing things in an environmentally friendly way is awesome to say the least (you can visit this link to check out the Brush with Bamboo product shown above).

I hope you will enjoy them the same way that I do!
