New dental technique could spell the end of cavities and fillings

If you’ve been waiting for a better way to heal cavities, hang in there for couple years  – 2017 is when scientists from King’s College London are hoping to make available to the public a new pain-free technique of rebuilding teeth called Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralization (EAER).

The treatment will work by increasing the natural process of minerals calcium and phosphate rebuilding the teeth, reported The Guardian. It takes two steps: first, the dentist prepares the damaged enamel, and second, an electric current sends minerals into the area.

“The way we treat teeth today is not ideal. When we repair a tooth by putting in a filling, that tooth enters a cycle of drilling and refilling as, ultimately, each ‘repair’ fails,” said Professor Nigel Pitts, from King’s College London.

The company Reminova from Scotland took over the commercial side of this project and is developing the dental instrument that performs EAER. Its price is predicted to be about $10,000.

“We can reverse the decay and rebuild the enamel. So you never get those horrible fillings and never have to face an injection. Dental drilling becomes a thing of the past. With our treatment you can top-up your natural teeth enamel whenever you need, just as you’d service your car when it needs a bit of loving care,” stated Reminova CEO Dr. Jeff Wright.

How Common is Tooth Decay?

It has been estimated that 2.3 billion people each year have a tooth cavity. Tooth decay happens when the minerals are lost in the enamel. That can occur when a tooth comes to contact with a lot of acidic food or drinks. When that happens, the enamel will become weaker and weaker after time and eventually get destroyed, allowing the bacteria to enter inside the tooth and form a cavity. As King’s College scientists discovered, it is possible to stop and reverse this process by providing more minerals – calcium and phosphate – to the teeth.

Tooth Re-mineralization at Home

In the past few years, many people have come forward saying that they have healed their own teeth with diet, pH balance, minerals, and re-mineralization products. The mainstream modern dentistry is too obsessed with drilling and fluoride to study these other methods. But according to an interview with Dental Health Advocate Ramiel Nagel, the Author of “Cure Tooth Decay,” whose mission became researching and finding alternative teeth treatments after his daughter developed tooth decay at just one year old, teeth re-mineralization is very possible and fluoride is just “a poison that temporary provides a small protection for the tooth,” and it has many alternatives.

I personally suffered from tooth decay after a stomach condition sent so much acid into my body over the years, it affected the enamel on most of my teeth. When my dentist told me one day that I needed a crown because one cavity was too large for a filling, I decided to try something before going forward with it, for health and monetary concerns.

What I found was Uncle Harry’s re-mineralization products. Back in 2008, the company was much smaller and only focused on mouth and dental care. As a disclaimer, Uncle Harry’s never contacted me to speak about them, these are the products I still personally use on daily basis. I used the re-mineralization kit and my dentist was surprised that for three years when they took the X-rays my cavity did not grow in size.

Did the product heal it completely? It did not. But it was too large, and it is recommended to start re-mineralization as soon as you see those tiny white spots on your teeth – the sign of early decay. Those who have started earlier had much more success with actually healing the cavity completely.

My personal opinion aligns with Professor Pitts that fillings are a temporary and not an ideal solution. Every filling I ever got eventually fell out, the cavity re-appeared, a larger filling had to be put in, and eventually a crown had to be made, which also will not last forever. I think we are at the age of science where we will finally understand how teeth can re-grow themselves, and it is exciting to see the first products and first successful studies of this new age start appearing.
