In March 2016, a one-of-a-kind event unfolded as approximately 100 people packed the historic Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Michigan for a mesmerizing new type of spiritual and emotional healing event.
The star of the show? An impressive collection of 333 hand-crafted Tibetan healing bowls, direct from small artisans in Nepal, where they had been flown in from in order to perform a special ceremony.
Dubbed the ‘Galactavation,’ the event was the brainchild of Mark “Dr. Dream” Peebler, who specializes in the ancient and widely revered art of sound healing with Tibetan bowls.
The many different bowls were separated into categories representing the different energy centers (or chakras as Eastern healers call them) of the body, and played in a specific order to stimulate and re-energize all of these different key points. Each bowl was also accompanied with a specific essential oil ranging from peppermint (uplifting and energizing) to the fabled Biblical oil Frankincense (soothing, calming) to pure rose oil, which is said to have the highest frequency of any essential oil.
Audience members were instructed to inhale each oil after it had been rubbed on their wrists, as they sank deep into the healing vibrations of the specially-tuned bowls.
As time flew by and the boundaries between the physical and the spiritual became blurred, it became clear to the audience that something special was happening.
Sound Therapy – A Powerful Healing Modality
The event was part of the third Awake and Empowered Expo, which has become a showcase for all things holistic healing (and all things “alien” and spiritual in a city that’s still in the middle of its own personal transformation (Detroit).
Guests at the ‘Galactavation’ flocked to Peebler’s booth after the event to discuss all of the unique things they felt, heard, and saw at the event. Many of them purchased their own Tibetan healing bowls to take home (proceeds went to help Nepalese villagers); each of them tuned to specific frequencies to correspond with different sounds and emotions. They had experienced the power of sound healing up close and personal in an especially powerful and visceral way.
Sound Healing Proven Throughout History
While there haven’t exactly been a whole lot of 333 Tibetan bowl healing performances happening these days, sound healing is nonetheless making a major comeback.
And while modern medicine doesn’t officially recognize it, it’s been a long part of human history.
In traditional tribal cultures, mantras, communal songs, and chants have long been a sacred part of healing ceremonies. In temples of the Far East, the aforementioned Tibetan bowls and other soothing instruments have long played a major role.
Even churches have a long history of sound healing, from songs and hymns to gospel choirs and even more traditional methods such as special songs which contain special ‘Solfeggio’ healing frequencies.
As holistic health has continued to evolve, more and more people are implementing sound as part of their healing practices as well.
Doctor Used Tibetan Bowls to Heal Cancer Patients
One health professional who conducted real-life research on the cutting edge of sound as healing was Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, author of ‘The Healing Power of Sound: Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness Using Sound, Voice and Music.’
The monk left after 2 weeks of treatment, but not before telling Gaynor his personal story of how he became an orphan and how he was essentially suffering from a broken heart, missing his parents. The monk left a bowl with the doctor, who immediately was transfixed by it.
“I was taken with the tones and the over-tones and I could literally feel them going through every cell in my body,” Gaynor said in this interview.
“I could not only hear it with my ears, but I felt it through-out my body. So, I figured that would be an excellent thing for patients who were dealing with serious illnesses”
Gaynor started using bowls to work with his patients and the results were “phenomenal,” he said, noting that they allow people dealing with fear and other negative emotions to find an inner sense of calmness and harmony.
“That’s something all of us have, but most of us don’t know exists,” he said.
Gaynor used the bowls to work on people with problems relating to illness, personal problems, stress from work or financial issues, and much more, including cancer patients. In addition to metal Tibetan bowls he also used crystal healing bowls, which emit similar sounds and can be tuned to various frequencies.
According to Gaynor, research shows that certain types of music can change our brain waves and put us in more relaxed and peaceful inner states, from which more outer peace can eventually flow. Immune function can also be improved by listening to certain types of music ranging from classical to the soothing tones of Tibetan healing bowls, he said.
“I believe that sound can play a role in virtually any medical disorder, since it redresses imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning,” he said.
While chemotherapy and similarly harsh physical treatments have serious questions surrounding their efficacy and safety, there’s no question that sound healing is a safe and powerful way for anyone to heal. As Gaynor’s career progressed, he began to implement more and more holistic treatment methods into his practice even though some supporters of mainstream medicine questioned him.
But as Gaynor noted, there’s still so much that mainstream medicine can learn from the tried-and-true knowledge of the ancients.
“I think it’s very important for us to bring back some of the ancient wisdom,” Gaynor said, noting the success he’s seen with his patients. “When I started looking into sound and healing I found that every culture on earth has used sound, voice and music as part of their healing rituals.”
