The controversial topic of Chinese companies and interests purchasing American land has come to the forefront in recent years amid the purchase of one of America’s largest pork companies, Cincinnati, Ohio based Smithfield Foods, by a large Chinese conglomerate (full details here).

A storm has been brewing in Arizona recently as governor Kathleen Marie Hobbs, also known as Katie Hobbs, has faced a backlash for a political decision she made recently.

Hobbs, who was elected to the post of governor in November 2022 and is a member of the Democratic Party, made the decision on Thursday, June 5.

It is now making the social media news cycle as people discuss the fallout from her veto of a bill that would have prevented Chinese companies from purchasing American land due to national security concerns.

Governor Hobbs Vetoes China Land Grab Bill

The state of Arizona will not ban the People’s Republic of China from buying property in the state after Hobbs chose to veto a Republican-back measure that previously passed both the state’s House and the Senate.

The bill was sponsored by 13 Republican senators and passed the House 41-17 with two voters abstaining.

It then moved to the Senate where it passed 17-11 with two voters abstaining.

Hobbs vetoed the bill, putting an end it after its previous successes.

The bill would have banned China from making land purchases in the state.

Hobbs’ veto was criticized by Arizona Senate Majority Leader Janae Sharp, a Republican from Surprise, Arizona, who said Hobbs endangered state and national security, pointing to a recent effort by China to lease property near Luke Air Force Base in Glendale near the capital city Phoenix.

The base is where F-35 stealth fighter jet pilots are currently being trained.

“SB1109 was a commonsense measure to ensure enemies of the United States would not have easy access to our military bases and critical infrastructure to carry out harm,” Sharp said.

Sharp also said that Hobbs is violating her oath of office with “politically motivated” vetoes of alleged safety based measures.

Hobbs Doubles Down on Veto Decision

Hobbs acknowledged the importance of protecting American infrastructure but does not believe the bill is an appropriate way to do it.
She called it “ineffective at counter-espionage,” saying it “does not directly protect our military assets.”
“Additionally, it lacks clear implementation criteria and opens the door to arbitrary enforcement,” she added in a letter to the Legislature issued earlier this week after her veto decision.
She said the measure “lacks clear implementation,” an assertion Republican Rep. Alexander Kolodin sharply disagreed with in a message to the Arizona governor.
“How does it lack clear implementation?” Kolodin asked.
“If the People’s Republic of China owns property in Arizona, they can’t. The PRC can’t buy land in Arizona. They can’t own land in Arizona. If the PRC is on the title to the land then it violates the law. And if the PRC isn’t ont he title to the land, then it doesn’t violate the law.
“It couldn’t be clearer.”
