Lawsuit Numbers Skyrocketing Against “The Most Financially Successful Drug of All Time”

Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor have long been controversial due to research on dangers they’ve been linked to, and now one leading holistic health website is sounding the alarm over the rising number of lawsuits being filed against cholesterol drug manufacturers.

According to a report from Health Impact News, there were over 959 claims filed against Lipitor as of mid-July 2014, and many filed against Crestor as well as other similar generic drugs, numbering well over 1,000 this year and increasing at a rapid pace, the article said.

Diabetes risks, especially in older women, are well established: in 2012, the U.S. FDA updated labels warning a link to the disease.

The lawsuits over these drugs have centered mostly around cases of diabetes after taking the drugs, but lawsuits for liver damage, Alzheimer’s, and breast cancer are among those being filed. Over 300+ health problems have been linked to the drugs.

Lipitor is considered to be the most financially successful drug of all-time by a wide margin, but recent warnings have led many to reconsider whether to take it.

Lawsuits on the Rise Since Lipitor Drug Patent Expiration

Also noted in the Health Impact News report: an increase in lawsuits for the above health problems and others since the patent for Lipitor expired in 2011.

The drug was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the 1997 ruling that large pharmaceutical companies could advertise directly to consumers, as millions were convinced that they needed the drugs to prevent heart disease.

Now with the patent expired, the search is on for the “next big thing” in cholesterol drugs, but some health professionals have been warning that the drugs are unnecessary, sometimes to the detriment of their careers according to the Health Impact report.

Statin drugs have been widely believed to interfere with the body’s ability to utilize CoQ10, which is why many naturopathic doctors recommend taking CoQ10 supplements should people choose to take statins, especially in Europe.

As noted in the video below, “the real drug trials happen when millions of people in America begin taking them…”
