The British, Bill Gates funded Biotech company Oxitec is releasing genetically modified mosquitoes in numerous Brazilian cities including Suzano in the state of São Paulo, according to a video report from Reuters news service.
Suzano declared a state of emergency in regards to dengue fever last month, the report said.
The GMO mosquitoes have been bred and scientifically altered to ‘reduce A. aegypti (yellow fever mosquito)’ populations by up to 90% according to Natalia Ferreira, Oxitec’s general manager in Brazil.
The insects have been released despite ongoing controversy and public opposition to the novel GMO mosquitoes, which critics say have not been fully tested for safety and potential adverse effects to human health and the environment.
Some concerns center around the possibility that these novel, lab created insects could pass on their genes to native mosquitoes with unknown consequences and effects.
Controversy Surrounding GMO Mosquitoes
The mosquitoes have previously been released in some regions of the world including parts of Brazil and the United States. They have been authorized for release in counties in Florida and Texas.
The mosquitoes have been funded by a $4.1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Previously, home owners in Florida stated they were ‘tricked’ into releasing the mosquitoes on their property without being told the full truth about what they were allowing.
On April 17, 2018, non-GMO activist Mila de Mier journeyed to Washington, D.C. in hopes of informing the United States Food and Drug Administration about her and others’ concerns about the novel, lab created mosquitoes.
She brought a petition with more than 200,000 signatures on it to the city where the agency’s headquarters was located, but tragically died after being found face down in a hotel swimming pool.
Brazilian Plan Involves Deaths of Female Offspring
The new Brazilian plan will unleash the GMO mosquitoes on Brazilian cities in the coming days. They are genetically modified to carry a gene that kills off any female offspring the insects spawn.
Brazilian officials have also discussed rolling out a vaccine in hopes of controlling the problem.
