The Trojan latex condoms brand is one of the most well known and best-selling in the United States and across the world. Currently, the company has 8 of the top 10 best-selling condom products on Amazon.com with the other two positions occupied by the company SKYN.
Trojan is not known for using healthy and natural materials, choosing to focus more on the features and functionality of its products.
Word surfaced on social media that Trojan has been hit with a lawsuit alleging that Trojan brand products are not safe because of the presence of “forever chemicals,” also knwon as per-and-polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS.
The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan (New York) federal court on behalf of plaintiff Matthew Goodman, who said that “America’s #1 Condom” is “unfit” for its intended usage because of the presence of these chemicals.
Trojan’s condoms and sexual lubricants are manufactured by the Church & Dwight Company. The brand was started by Merle Leland Youngs in the 1910s after he moved to New York City, and has since gone on to become a household name and a mainstay in the drug stores, bathroom dispensaries and convenience stores worldwide.
Lab Testing Reveals Alleged PFAS Results
The lawsuit was filed after independent lab testing on Trojan’s Ultra Thin condoms purchased in a Manhattan pharmacy showed the presence of organic fluorine, which is “practically nonexistent” outside its use in man-made PFAS chemicals according to a report from Reuters.
“Based on the label, he reasonably believe the product was safe for use on his genitalia,” the complaint said, referring to Goodman.
“Had defendant disclosed on the label that the products contained PFAS chemicals, and the harms that can result from contact from PFAS chemicals, he would not have purchased the products, or at the very least, would have only been willing to pay significantly less,” the lawsuit added.
