What Chocolate Cravings Could Really Mean for Your Body (Plus a Recipe for Raw Chocolate Truffles)

Chocolate cravings. We all get them from time-to-time, and just about all of us give in, quickly and quite willingly.

But what could they really mean for your body and the nutrients you may be lacking? As Salome Torres, a raw nutritonist, health coach and co-author of the books ‘Raw Chocolate Revolution’ and ‘Raw Vegan Radiance’ (both written with me), puts it, a lack of magnesium could be the biggest culprit.

“Chocolate cravings can have different meanings; one of them is that your body needs magnesium!” she said in her most recent blog post. “Magnesium is good for our heart and helps our muscles relax. Most people have a magnesium deficiency, so make sure to add magnesium to your diet.”

Some of the best sources of magnesium are dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds like pumpkin seeds, and even Epsom Salt baths. There are also plenty of magnesium supplements that work wonders if you’re in a pinch and need something to help you relax at work or in a tense moment.

Raw chocolate is also an excellent way to get more magnesium into your diet, and these truffles make for a quick and delicious raw and healthy dessert to help boost your magnesium levels! You can check out the video below to see how Salome makes them:

This recipe is featured in our book for the Amazon Kindle, ‘Raw Chocolate Revolution: Recipes for Your Healthy Chocolate Fix,’ which also includes bonus beauty recipes (that you can eat afterward)! The book recently became a best seller in the ‘Chocolate Desserts’ category for Amazon Kindle, PC and Mac (screenshot below, or half of it anyway -Nick).

As Salome noted in her blog post, chocolate can also add to a healthy body and brain chemistry.

“Another reason why we crave chocolate is because we need love; chocolate is metabolized to serotonin, a hormone that boosts our mood;  in those cases it might (also be good) to go for a walk, water your plants, spend time with a friend.

“Hope you enjoy it and may all beings be happy and have access to nourishing foods,” Salome added.
