Should Great Britain Start Growing GMOs? With Time Ticking Away, Oscar-Winning Actors, 57 Million People Weigh In

Genetically modified organisms in our food crops have taken over the American countryside in large part due to government collusion with Monsanto and a lack of transparency, but the crops are far less common in Europe, including Great Britain.

Despite widespread public opposition to GMOs overseas, Monsanto and other multinationals are pulling out all the stops in their quest to find backdoor entry to other countries whose citizens do not accept them.

According to this article from the Daily Mail, a push is on from the British government with the goal of allowing Britain to grow GM crops even if other countries exercise their right to ban them.

If successful, GMOs could be grown in 6 to 18 months, meaning time is of the essence. With the fate of Britain’s food crops, and the health of its citizens and environment hanging in the balance, several Hollywood stars (and millions of supporters) have signed an open letter warning the British general public about the grave risks the crops present.

Oscar-Winning Actors , Millions More Among the Signees

With the goal of countering the pro-GMO campaign being undertaken by the British government, several prominent American figures including two Oscar-winning Hollywood actors have signed a letter that was delivered Nov. 10 to British officials by a delegation that included former Labour environment secretary, Michael Meacher, designer Vivienne Westwood, and others.

The letter represented a monumental showed of support  a coalition of 57 million people in total signed it according to the Daily Mail article.

Among those who signed were two Oscar-winning Hollywood actors: Jeremy Irons and Susan Sarandon, along with Daryl Hannah, Robert Kennedy Jr. and millions of other concerned U.S. citizens.

GMOs Have Not Delivered on Their Promises”

Despite promises to increase yields and decrease pesticide use, GMOs have not delivered, the letter argues, stating that it can be 24 percent higher and is harmful to bees and other insects like the Monarch butterfly. The ongoing problem of herbicide-resistant superweeds was also cited.

Sarandon issued the following warning according to the Daily Mail article: “Instead of bringing certainty and security, GM organisms have raised more and more worrying questions about their effectiveness, their necessity, and even their safety. Polls show that the majority of U.S. citizens – and in fact citizens everywhere – either want them labeled or taken out of the food system altogether.”
