Lab grown meat and other lab grown projects have become a hot topic in recent years with seven states recently announcing bans, including Texas, on the controversial technologies.
Many of these projects begin as a method for creating animal-free alternatives to favorite foods like meat, dairy, and other similar products that traditionally come from cows and other livestock.
Recently, the non-profit watchdog organization GMO Free USA made a post alerting its 782,000 plus followers as to the nature of lab grown cheese companies operating in Great Britain in hopes of bringing their cheese mimicking creations stateside.
The lab grown cheeses are made using processes similar to lab grown meat which has set off warning bells in the minds of non-GMO and organic advocates.
London Company Raises Millions for GMO Cheese Project

A London company called ‘Better Dairy’ announced in 2020 that it had raised over two million dollars (2.17 million dollars, or 1.6 million British pounds) to create a new type of fermented animal free cheese product.
The company has partnered with dairy cheese producers to scale up production and reduce costs according to an article from BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).
The lab grown GMO cheeses are being made from “molecularly identical dairy proteins” created using genetically modified yeast.
The company is making GMO yeast based cheddar and has made mozzarella, blue cheese and soft cheeses.
“If you’ve experienced plant-based cheeses, a lot of them have off flavours, and typically it comes from trying to use nut-based or coconut fats – and they impart flavours that aren’t normally in there,” Better Dairy scientist Kate Royle said according to BBC.
GMO Cheese Launch Coming Soon
The company is one of several who are planning to launch their lab grown cheeses in the near future.
A French company called Standing Ovation has plans to bring its lab cheeses to the UK and Europe in 2027. Another company called Those Vegan Cowboys also has big plans for its lab made cheeses.
Better Dairy has not launched yet but has ambitious plans to create a starting point for other companies to create innovative GMO lab grown cheeses in the future. The three companies’ products could reach United States shelves by the end of this calendar year.
“As usual, the U.S. FDA will require no long-term safety testing, rubber-stamping these products as the agency has already done with lab-grown chicken and lab-grown fish,” GMO Free USA wrote.
“Meanwhile, these same companies won’t be able to launch their products in the EU for at least 3 to 4 more years.
“Why? Because EU regulations require a bit more scrutiny for ‘novel foods.’ But here in the U.S., the FDA continues to allow companies, in this case foreign corporations, to self-approve their own products, allowing Americans to be the lab rats,” the organization added.
Better Dairy Founder’s Ambitious Lab Cheese Plans
The company’s co-founder and CEO Jevan Nagarajah says the company wants to disrupt the entire dairy industry.
It sounds as if his ultimate goal is to sneak GMO yeast based cheeses into the food supply without consumers knowing, based on comments he made to a British website.
“While our intention was initially to enable a wave of better dairy products, our ambitions have grown to target the disruption of the entire dairy supply chain across dairy and non-dairy categories,” he said to GreenQueen.com.hk.
“Our vision is to create a world where humans are vegan without even realizing it,” Nagarajah said.
