Hormones are chemical messengers that influence and/or determine key bodily functions including growth, metabolism, reproduction, mood and many others.
Hormonal imbalances are highly prevalent in today’s society and may be caused by stress, birth control pills, steroids, medical conditions, sleep problems, thyroid disease, Addison’s disease and/or several other conditions or chronic health issues.
Recently, one of the world of holistic health’s most well known professionals, Dr. Josh Axe, took to social media to share five tips for combatting hormonal imbalances, including one that is not well known among the mainstream that is gaining attention lately.
5 Ways to Balance Hormones
Dr. Axe also warned that there are myriad signs that may indicate hormonal imbalance, including:
-Fatigue
-Weight gain
-Thinning hair and brittle nails
-Mood swings
-Decreased libido
“Don’t dismiss these signs,” Dr. Axe said. “Oftentimes they are indicators of key hormonal imbalances.”
“If you’re struggling with hormonal imbalance, start with these five foods,” he continued.
1. Eggs-
Eggs “boost hormone production” according to Dr. Axe.
Most eggs on store shelves are produced from chickens packed in tight spaces, fed genetically modified corn and soy that may be drenched in roundup.
Look for organic eggs and pasture-raised or free range eggs.
Check labels, call companies and ask farmers questions if you buy eggs from farmer’s markets to ensure they are allowed to forage and graze on grass and for insects and that they were fed a healthy non-GMO and preferably organic diet.
2. Salmon-
Salmon is one of the healthiest, leanest and strongest fish you can possibly buy, catch and eat.
Avoid farm raised salmon whenever possible as these fish are often raised in dirty, deplorable conditions and fed unhealthy diets similar to what mainstream livestock are fed (from genetically modified ingredients).

3. Avocado-
Avocado is a fruit that is rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 monounsaturated fatty acids.
Great for hormone health, avocadoes can also improve brain health, help weight and blood sugar management and improve energy levels.
Non-organic avocadoes have a thick skin and generally aren’t sprayed with as many pesticides as other popular fruits, but organic is the best choice whenever available.

4. Seed Cycling-
A practice that is not especially well known but has been gaining attention lately.
Seed cycling can help to support fertility, improve health in menopausal women and improve overall balance according to Dr. Axe.
Seed cycling is a practice that involves eating different types of seeds (or consuming healthy seed oils) at specific times during a woman’s menstrual cycle to support hormonal balance.
The practice suggests consuming flax and pumpkin seeds during the first half of a woman’s cycle to support estrogen production and sunflower and sesame seeds during the second half to support progesterone.

5. Broccoli + Greens-
These two foods clear excess estrogen from the body making them suitable for both men and women depending on what is needed within the body.
Broccoli sprouts can also assist in this area as they offer their own unique health benefits.
Eat your greens including cruciferous vegetables, preferably organic, and your hormones will be supported and balanced.
