My hope is this article will spark your interest and that you will start thinking about holistic approaches to your life.  Living holistically is a huge passion of mine and I strive to live my life that way as much as possible.

It was only a couple years ago when I first heard the word Ayurveda. I asked myself, what could this word possibly mean?

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest ideas of natural medicine, developed in India about 3,000 years ago.

Ultimately, Ayurveda is a way of life and holistic healing that is all about your mind, body and spirit being balanced.

I wholeheartedly believe in this way of living!

Ayurvedic medicine uses a combination of different techniques including herbs, minerals and other unique health practices.

Shilajit, a mineral-rich supplement taken from mountainous regions such as the Himalayas, is one of them.

Shilajit: What is it?  A funny word with great benefits.

This brings me to Shilajit, another word that is not well known in the mainstream.

I first became familiar with it a couple of years ago.

It is amazing to me how this unique substance formed.  It happened when India collided with Asia and formed the Himalayan mountains some 50 million years ago.

Shilajit is important to our health because it contains Fulvic acid. This fulvic acid draws trace minerals and metals from deep inside the Earth, thus becoming one of the most used superfoods in Himalaya and Siberia.

This is excellent for our bodies because with mass agriculture our soil is seriously lacking in the vitamins and minerals needed to give the plants what they need, which in turn does not give our bodies what it needs.

The quality of our food is seriously lacking.

Shilajit helps maintain homeostasis in the body by penetrating the cell membrane.  When your body is in top shape you will have the energy you need to do the things you want to do as well as do the chores you have to do. Shilajit is great in keeping calcium inside the bones. If you lose calcium and potassium from your bones they can become weak and brittle and break easily which puts stress on other parts of your body which in turns stresses you out. Can you envision this snowball effect?

It also contains a lot of iron which helps with anemia.  Being anemic makes you tired and you can cause heart complications.

Plant-Based Minerals Versus Man Made: Modern Medicine

When I think of anything I’m going to be putting into my body I always want to make sure it is safe.  I feel anything made by nature, if used correctly, is far better than anything man made. Pharmaceutical drugs are far more expensive and have so many more side effects than plant derived minerals.

Do not get me wrong, plant minerals have some side effects as well so do your research when trying something new like herbs. Pharmaceuticals have more regulations than minerals but this does not always mean they are safe.  Whereas minerals can be safe but they are not as regulated as pharmaceuticals are, generally speaking. Herbs are less expensive than pharmaceutical drugs. Pharmaceuticals tend to be abused more, to include over the counter drugs such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Modern medicine targets the symptoms and not the source of the issues. This leads me into man made, synthetic medicine.

Synthetic – Fake

Do you ever think about what it takes to make that pill?  The energy, how far did that pill travel to get to you, the consumer?

Even “Whole Food” natural vitamins you find in the store. For the most part they are from natural ingredients but they still have synthetic qualities and while this may be a better alternative than a pharmaceutical drug, it is far from the best option provided to us by nature.

Natural products still have risks but I feel the benefits of such natural medicines far exceeds the risk.

Like I always say, do the research and make an informed decision on what is best for you.

Natural Remedies

What happened back in the day, say 1940, 1950 era, when these drugs didn’t exist?

People relied on “home remedies” or natural ways to combat their diseases and they had much better diets. Their lifespan may not have been as long, but most historians attribute these issues to disease outbreaks, poor sanitation, war and conflict, lack of access to enough dietary variety, nutrition and calories, and other factors.
