Four Health Benefits of Grounding That Everyone Should Know About

Grounding is a healthy practice that is characterized by walking barefoot on the Earth

The practice of walking barefoot on the Earth is something that has been done for millennia in tribal settings and among people who are health conscious and in tune with the incredible benefits that result.

The positive effects of grounding were famously detailed in the health guide ‘Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever!’ by authors Clinton Ober, Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra and Martin Rucker.

This particular book has had a profound impact on my health outcomes and on my health regiment over the years. Earthing aka grounding offers a simple, free and practical way to stimulate and heal the nerve endings on your feet, where a massive number of nerve endings resides.

As an aside, some earthing/grounding advocates have claimed that feet have the most nerve endings on the body. Recently, it was revealed by scientists that the fingertips contain the most nerve endings.

Regardless, the qualitative truth remains for anyone who has practiced grounding: it works incredibly work for overall health and can help a person to feel more “alive” in their day-to-day life by stimulating the many nerve endings at the body of the feet and the skin on the bottom of the feet as well.

Top Four Benefits of Earthing For Your Health

There are so many benefits to Earthing and Grouding, that much is for sure. Several documentary movies have described the health benefits of Earthing in people who have overcame debilitating, potentially deadly diseases

One of them is ‘The Earthing Movie’ which is free to watch on YouTube.

You can also watch a talk on Earthing from neuroscientist Andrew Huberman below.

The top benefits of Earthing include the following:

1. Reduced Cortisol Levels-

Cortisol is a chemical our bodies produce when stressed. People make different levels of Cortisol depending on the “terrain” of their body including the bacteria, pathogens, nutrients, nutrient deficiencies, mindsets, emotions and more going on inside of their body.

The research consistently shows that Earthing or Grounding is one of the best ways to reduce stress levels to feel more calm, which elicits a healing response in subjects over time.

Walking or standing barefoot on the Earth including dirt, sand, grass or other terrain is the best way to heal yourself using Earthing.

2. Balances Heart Rate-

Heart rate variability is a predictor of possible cardiac events. With this in mind it is important to note that Grounding or Earthing can balance a person’s heart rate, oftentimes reducing the amount of beats per given time period.

A December 2022 study published in the Biomedical Journal found that grounding improved heart-rate variability in 27 at-risk patients.

3. Improved Blood Flow-

Another branch of this research found that test subjects who sat in a chair for one hour improved blood flow, also known as ‘blood viscosity,’ dramatically to the top parts of their body, including the face.

Enhanced tissue repair was recorded along with improved ‘facial appearance’ and other ‘improved implications of overall health.

4. Energy Production

The practice of grounding ‘provides a primary source of cellular restoration and energy’ by supporting the power centers of human cells, also known as your mitochondria.

Walking barefoot on the Earth gives your bare feet, skin and the nerve endings within the ability to tap into the boundless energy source of the Earth. Electrons and negative ions flow through the feet and into the Earth creating a closed circuit of energy, charging the the feet and the rest of your body like a phone and transferring energy to the ‘batteries’ of your physiology.

How to Begin Grounding

If you haven’t tried grounding yet, there are many ways to get started. One simple way is to begin walking or sitting barefoot in your backyard. Feel free to wash your feet afterward if you must.

If you don’t have a yard to walk around in, try wearing sandals or flip-flops on your next hike and slipping them off at times during your walk. You can also sit and gain energy on a bench during or after your hike while placing your feet on the bare ground.

The benefits are incredible, but for those who are skeptical of grounding it may take a little time to fully acquaint yourself to them. Stick with your routine and you will be rewarded with incredible benefits over time — benefits that are free and incredibly effective.
