Emergen-C and GMOs: The Hidden Truth You’ve Never Known Before!

Emergen-C GMO

Emergen-C is one of the most familiar and top selling Vitamin C products of all-time. It has thousands of four and five-star reviews on Amazon.com, and is used by millions of people who believe it to be the best choice for preventing colds and improving Vitamin C levels.

This supplement hasn’t come without controversy, however.

Emergen-C has been criticized by those in the non-GMO and organic movements because it uses ascorbic acid, a synthetic form of Vitamin C typically derived from corn.

There have been reports in the past that Emergen-C currently or previously contained GMO corn-derived ingredients considering the type of Vitamin C that is used. Vitamin C of this kind often comes from China, adding to consumer fears regarding these and other Vitamin C products.

Our Non-GMO Promise:’

Emergen-C addressed the reports of its products containing GMO corn recently with a message on its website regarding its ingredient sourcing.

Titled, ‘Our Non-GMO Promise,’ it states that the company does not use GMOs.

“Our dedication to high-quality and safety begins in the research laboratory and continues through manufacturing and delivery of our products to you,” the company wrote. “With this focus, we take pride in being built on a foundation of science & quality, which delivers you products in the forms and with the features you prefer.”

The company went on to say that its Emergen-C products are Non-GMO Project Verified, in other words made without ingredients that are genetically engineered.

“We recognize that some consumers are looking for products where less is more,” they say on the website.

More information can be found by clicking here, including the company and government definitions of genetically modified foods and ingredients.

Emergen-C and GMOs: The Big Catch You Should Know About

While Emergen-C’s commitment to non-GMO sourcing for its products should be commended, there is at least one major catch.

The company also notes that its Non-GMO promise applies only to Emergen-C. The vague wording of this promise, which leaves out the word “products,” suggests that other products or ingredients from the company could possibly contain GMOs.

The Emergen-C company is owned by Haleon, which also includes Caltrate and Centrum vitamins. The Centrum company recently announced it has begun sourcing non-GMO ingredients, but also admits that it “allow(s) for the use of fermented ingredients or processing aids that are genetically engineered (more info here).”

Caltrate, a calcium supplement company, does not mention a non-GMO promise on its website, suggesting it may still use such ingredients.

Finally, these companies offer few if any organic options, meaning that there is a real chance their supplements could contain toxic, synthetic pesticides, and are mostly void of whole food ingredients that contain the widest spectrum of co-factors the body needs to absorb Vitamin C and utilize it to its fullest potential.

Real Vitamin C From Nature is an Essential Building Block

Vitamin C is important because it enables the body to efficiently utilize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. An antioxidant, it chemically binds and neutralizes tissue-damaging free radicals.

Vitamin C also plays a key role in the formation of collagen, the body’s most important building protein, and is essential to the proper functioning of all internal organsaccording to the American Chemical Society.
