Butter is one of the most popular culinary items in America, with nearly 300 million people buying it in 2020.
In recent years, more people have begun to learn about butter’s benefits for health as well.
Butter contains butyric acid, a fuel source for the body that reduces inflammation, provides sustained energy, supports digestive health, and may lower the risk of certain diseases.
Unfortunately, the butter in your fridge, especially of the non-organic variety, may contain any number of potentially toxic, previously banned pesticides, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Pesticides Found in Butter Samples
In 2021, the USDA gathered data on butter to determine which pesticides may be lurking within popular brands.
Following the release of the information in an article last week, the non-profit GMO Free USA did a deep dive into the statistics to share the most pertinent information with its readers.
“Most people don’t consider that butter could be contaminated with pesticides, so we took a deep dive into the test results for conventional butter and compared the findings to the previous report from 2013,” the organization wrote on its blog.
2013 Results
-688 butter samples tested
-8 different pesticides detected
-An average of 1.43 pesticides found per sample
2021 Results
-177 butter samples tested
-15 different pesticides detected
-An average of 2.14 pesticides per sample recorded

DDT Derived Substance Among Pesticides Found
A chart showing the different pesticides found can be found on the GMO Free USA blog by clicking here, and is shown below.
Among the pesticides found are DDE (a metabolite of the banned pesticide DDT), and other potentially toxic, synthetic pesticides.
The best way to avoid these pesticides is to buy organic and grass-fed butter whenever possible.
