In the past 10 to 15 years or so since I became interested in organic food and drink and began buying both of them consistently, I have become a big fan of organic coffee.
I don’t drink it every day but when I do I have always preferred fresh-ground organic coffee from whole coffee beans, prepared in a French press. Instant coffee, or ‘steeped’ coffee in the case of the Steeped Coffee brand is something that had slipped my radar screen for a long time — until now.
Steeped Organic Coffee stands out from its competitors by focusing on an environmentally friendly approach to steeped coffee, in stark contrast to the competition.
Steeped Organic Coffee’s Noble Mission
Steeped Coffee is a coffee company based in Scotts Valley, California. It was founded by entrepreneur Josh Wilbur in Santa Cruz, California in 2017 with the intent of creating an alternative to the plastic waste producing K-Cup instant coffee machines that are now ubiquitous in homes and business across the country.
Wilbur’s goal was to create “steeped” coffee bags that are similar to tea bags. In this case, the bags are 100% compostable making them far less wasteful than K-Cups. They brew up quickly like instant coffee but are made in a similar fashion to tea by steeping coffee bags in hot water.
Wilbur spoke about the waste created by K-Cups nationwide in a recent interview.
“If you line up (K-Cup) pods sold since 2009, they would wrap around the planet over 100 times,” he said, according to the SteepedCoffee.com website.
According to Wilbur and his team, the number of plastic pods accumulating in landfills each year is greater than 10 billion. The Steeped.com website linked to an interview quoting the inventor of K-Cups, John Sylvan, as saying that he regrets ever making them because they are ‘nearly impossible to recycle,’ and that’s only taking the pods into account, not the K-Cup brewing machines.
“I feel bad sometimes that I ever (invented the K-Cup),” Sylvan said to James Hamblin of The Atlantic Magazine.
Steeped Organic Coffee Flavors
Other Steeped Coffee blends include a decaf blend and three specialty medium roasts and a light roast, the latter four of which are inspired by unique locations including Ethiopia and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Calif.
I personally tried the Sunrise, California, Odyssey, and Breakwater blends. All four were beyond any other steeped coffee I’ve had ever had in terms of the depth, complexity and richness of their flavors. I thoroughly enjoyed each blend and appreciated the convenience of being able to brew them in a few short minutes while still getting a high quality, delicious and rich organic cup of coffee.
Simply put, I cannot recommend Steeped Organic Coffee enough.
The company’s founder Josh Wilbur set out to create a product that tastes better than K-Cups and is more environmentally friendly, and he knocked it out of the park.
