Alcohol is a beverage consumed by a large number of people from the world’s longest living cultures, many of whom have alcohol drinking as a custom.

That being said, not everyone responds well to alcohol consumption and it can be disadvantageous for short-term health as well as long-term health in myriad ways.

For people who would rather drink non-alcoholic drinks in the same unique flavors that alcohol drinkers are used to having on hand, there is a line of four different types of Zero Proof Spirits from the company Philters that does a good job of recreating and reimagination these drinks.

Here are my thoughts on Philters drinks and their ingredients/health benefits as well as a few things I didn’t like about them.

Philters Zero Proof Flavors

The Flavors I tried are as follows:

Mezkahl-

This drink mimics the Blue Agave sweetened drink known as a cousin of Tequila.

I have never had the alcoholic version before so I can’t comment on how it compares to that drink, but I did like the flavor in this one. It doesn’t contain agave which is controversial in terms of its health effects and instead has evaporated cane sugar.

I have had tequila and this tasted somewhat similar to tequila. If you like anything in the tequila category and don’t mind a milder taste due to the lack of alcohol you will probably enjoy this drink.

Whiski-

Whiskey is a drink I’ve had somewhat often and this version tastes fairly similar but once again milder than alcoholic versions without the same bitterness.

I personally prefer the alcoholic version but this is a delicious substitute if you are looking for a Zero Proof version.

This is made from Oak Chips which are commonly used to enhance and accelerate the aging process of Whiskey.

I could taste a smokey and earthy flavor that likely came from the Oak Chips and various herbs included.

Ruhm-

Based on spiced rum which is often made from coconuts, this drink tastes a lot like the real thing. It mixes well with a cola type drink, to bring out the unique flavors.

Jynn-

Jynn from Philters.

Gin is a drink that a good friend of mine used to really enjoy. I tried it once and did not like it for the most part.

As I grew older I began to like gin more although I rarely drank it.

This ‘Jynn’ take on gin does a good job of capturing the essence of the alcoholic version.

Health Benefits, Questions and Complaints

Health benefits-wise, I am a huge fan of the herbs included in these drinks.

The ingredients include herbs you would typically find in high priced supplements like L-Theanine (green tea extract for weight management and metabolism in the Jynn), Holy Basil (Tusli, a fluoride eraser), Siberian Ginseng and Ashwagandha in the Wiski, and so many others.

Complaint-wise I did not like that these have preservatives in them including Potassium Sorbate and Potassium Benzoate.

I also notice that they have a trademarked type of Citicoline. The trademark gave me pause because there is a chance it could signify something lab grown and/or genetically modified.

Emails to the company on the origins of this patented Citicoline nutrient were not returned.

Special thanks to the company for sending me these samples for review purposes.
