The nation’s seventh-largest retailer, Target, has recalled over 200,000 weighted blankets after the deaths of two young girls were reportedly linked to the sleep and anti-anxiety aids.

The recall was announced on December 22 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Target Corporation of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to the press release, the blankets may cause young children to become entrapped by unzipping and entering the blanket, which may pose a risk of death by asphyxiation.

The two girls who died from asphyxia both were reportedly entrapped inside of weighted blanket covers.

The girls, ages four and six, died at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in April of 2022.

To date, Target has received four reports of children becoming entrapped in the blankets.

Consumers Urged to Stop Using Recalled Blankets

Target and the CPSC are now urging consumers, and especially children, to stop using the recalled blankets immediately, and to contact the store for a refund if eligible.

The blankets weigh six pounds each, measuring 60 inches long and 40 inches wide.

They came with a removable, waterproof, washable color in one of several different printed designs.

CPSC and Target are urging consumers to stop using the recalled weighted blankets immediately and contact Target for a refund.

Created by the company Pillowfort Weighted Blankets, each comes in different prints or colors including unicorn white, space navy, pink, blue, gray, buffalo plaid red, blue constellation, and unicorn pink.

Their item numbers are as follows according to the press release:

-097-02-0140 (Unicorn – White)

-097-02-0148 (Space Navy)

-097-02-0361(Pink)

-097-02-0363 (Blue)

-097-02-0364 (Gray)

-097-02-1603 (Buffalo Plaid – Red)

-097-02-3904 (Blue Constellation)

The weighted blankets were manufactured in China, the press release added.

They were sold at Target stores nationwide and online at www.Target.com from December 2018 through September 2022, and retailed for $40.00.
