How to Get Rid of Flies Without Chemicals or Even a Fly Swatter

Spring and summer both signal that it’s time to kick back, relax, and open the windows to let a little breeze in.

Unfortunately, both spring and summer also bring with them a few particularly annoying little houseguests: flies. Few things are as annoyingly persistent as these flying guys.

Since using a flamethrower or pesticides aren’t sustainable (or even ethical) long term-solutions, I’ll be exploring how to get rid of these pests without endangering your family.

Prevention Is The Key

In a perfect world, you wouldn’t need to read this article because a perfect home would have no flies to pester you incessantly. Unfortunately, flies almost seem to be an inevitable fact of life.

However, there are some simple precautions you can take to at least make your home much more unappealing to flies. Trust me, these easy precautions go a long way keeping your home pest free.

Here’s what you can do:

– Inspect all your home’s windows and doors. You want to make sure they’re actually creating a tight seal that keeps your home protected. Pay special attention to screen doors and windows.

– Don’t leave your doors open for too long if you can help it. If you really need to ventilate your home, install a screen door.

– Pet feces are an ideal breeding ground for flies. I would recommend burying them in your backyard or putting them inside a plastic bag and then depositing them into a lidded garbage can.

– Speaking of garbage cans, make sure they’re all tightly sealed so they don’t become a fly utopia.

– When it comes to recycling food containers, always rinse them out to get rid of any food particles to starve out the flies.

– If you have a backyard filled with fruit trees, make sure you pick up any fruits that fall off the tree. If they linger for too long, they’ll ferment and become a treat for flies.

Ok, so you’ve taken all the precautionary measures but you’re still getting these buzzing uninvited guests. Don’t despair; I’ve got you covered with this amazing flytrap.

The best thing is that this fly countermeasure doesn’t rely on any toxic chemicals to get the job done.

How to Get Rid of Flies Naturally

Typically I don’t recommend using refined sugar for any recipe, but in this case it gets the job done. Now, let’s get started with the perfect non-toxic flytrap.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

– One wide mouth jar
– A stiff paper cone. (you can also make this yourself)
– Water
– Sugar (it’s to capture flies; but you should buy organic to support the industry!)

In the jar, mix the sugar and water to make it the perfect bait for your trap. Then you’ll need to get your hands on your paper cone. After that, it a simple matter of snipping off the top of the cone to create a one inch hole.

Then simply place the cone upside down in your jar. Make sure the tip is not touching the sugar water. Finish up the job by taping the cone in place.

The flies, attracted by the sugar water, will inevitably fly into the jar. However, they’ll never escape because the trap’s design will never let them out.

All you have to do is occasionally clean up the flies from the bottom of the jar.
