Since cellphone use only started becoming popular in the 1990s, the general public still has a long way to go before realizing the sheer amount of damage these devices are capable of causing.
But make no mistake about it, human health is at great risk because of this technology, with a staggering amount of studies linking modern day smartphones to cancer and other serious health issues.
In fact, one researcher recently issued a bold new warning on the matter, and it’s causing many people to stand up and take notice about exactly how much cell phone and wireless Internet usage is too much, and whether increased cancer rates could be the biggest side effect of all.
The heavy use of applications built around wireless networks 24/7 has become a relatively new trend.
And while this technology is still in its newborn phase in many ways, society has yet to see the real long-term effect it has on its users, as one University of California Berkeley researcher recently warned.
Cellphones are Carcinogenic?
The debate about cellphone safety and their potential link to brain cancer and fertility issues has been growing stronger as we continue to bathe ourselves in wireless technology more and more with each passing year.
While the official consensus is that cell phones may cause cancer (cellphones have been classified as a Group 2 carcinogen by the World Health Organization) even in spite of a supposed lack of information on the topic, Cal-Berkeley scientist Joel Moskowitz exposed recently that there are over 2,000 studies that link cellphones to severe health issues. He also explains why these studies are ignored.
Looking at all of these cases done as a whole, it’s easy to see why the results are conflicting. But when you remove the studies funded by the powerful wireless industry and cell phone manufacturers, which happen to be driving a powerful 21st century economic machine, the picture becomes far more clear according to Moskowitz.
“We have evidence of brain tumors and other head and neck tumors. We also have evidence of sperm damage in males, infertility in females,” he said.
This 2017 study linked cellphone use to a type of brain tumor; and a study from 2010 confirmed that talking for just 30 minutes a day for ten years increases the chance of brain cancer by 40%. It also concluded that cancer is most likely to appear at the side of your head used most often for talking.
“People need to know, people are unaware that cellphones as they are used now are not safe,”warned Ellie Marks is with the California Brain Tumor Association.
“There is clear evidence of increased tumor risk, brain tumor risk…particularly for people who have used cell phones for 10 or more years, especially on the side of the head on which they used the cell phone,” Moskowitz told the Berkeley City council about the peer-reviewed studies that have been done.

Berkeley Law: Cellphones Retailed Must Warn Customers
After years of debates, in an unanimous vote of 9-0, Berkeley passed the Cell Phone Right to Know Ordinance on May 12, 2015, and became the first city to make it a law that cellphone retailers must disclose cellphone health risks to customers due to cellphone emitting radio frequency (RF) radiation.
The safety notice read:
“To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radio frequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. This potential risk is greater for children.”
They also started recommending that the users do the following (great tips for anyone):
- Limit their time on the phone
- Keep the phone away from the head, use speakerphone, or headphones to talk.
- Be careful letting children use cellphones as their young brains are more affected (study).
- Don’t keep your phone in pants pocket, tucked in your shirt, or anywhere close to your body. This exceeds the federal safety regulations for RF exposure.
The retailers begrudgingly had to comply.
“The people who are selling you products are not selling them for your own good. They are selling them for their profit, and they play it fast and loose with regulations,” said Max Anderson, Berkeley City Council.
This ordinance’s biggest enemy is the CTIA, an organization representing the entire cell phone and wireless industry.
Moskowitz urged the Berkeley City Council in 2015, “Don’t let the CTIA intimidate you about the science.”
The CTIA is fighting back, however. Berkeley was forced to remove the warning about children’s health even though it is a fact. And on January 9, 2018, the organization filed a petition in the United States Supreme Court to hear their arguments against the Right to Know.
The industry’s aggressive tactics to hide and ignore human health risks has been compared multiple times to Big Tobacco’s infamous schemes from earlier in this century.
So why are cell phone companies and their products’ risks being let off the hook?
Are Wireless Companies The New Big Tobacco?
The wireless industry has done a lot to keep any negative news about cellphones from the public eye.
“…They’ve done a very good job at it, essentially following the same playbook that the tobacco industry used,” Moskowitz said.
“The cellphone industry is using the same playbook that the tobacco industry used successfully for decades. They’ve war-gamed the science,” Moskowitz said.
Just like the advertisements about cigarettes used to lie that they are good for you, even going as far as quoting doctors who supported Camels and other name brand cigarettes, the same thing is happening with cellphones and the whole wireless industry.
“Some scientists tried to argue that cigarette smoke was good for you, citing health professionals saying cigarettes were good for you. And cellphone industries have some research, and it’s pretty poor research, that suggests that cellphone radiation may be good for you,” Moskowitz said.
How did we come to this?
The investigative journalist Norm Alster wrote a detailed report published at Harvard University explaining just that. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) turned their back on consumer safety first with the Telecommunication Act of 1996, “the most lobbied bill in history,” according to Alster’s report.
Today, the CTIA meets with them 500 times a year — a massive lobbying effort that is clearly paying off for them.
Besides lobbying, the CTIA commonly employs former FCC members. This revolving door helps them to control the industry, and so far, they are winning.
As the result, we are left with issues in consumer safety, privacy, and health. Issues that are ignored because of the popularity of cell phones, but ones that could manifest themselves in life threatening health issues for anyone who is not careful enough to implement the guidelines above, at the very least.
Between the constant bombardment of EMFs through cell phone use, cell towers (including 5G), smart meter radiation, and much more, we are becoming guinea pigs, and knowledge of the true effects of this radiation is being systematically repressed according to many health advocates.
“There’s a long tradition of industries being able to delay a major public health problem from common knowledge for decades,” Morgan said. “It took 50 years to get tobacco, to get asbestos. Hopefully, this will be faster,” said safety advocate Lloyd Morgan.
Hopefully it won’t take 50 years, and to speed up the process, it is important to share information about this topic with each other and groups in powers. Because the FCC cannot and will not do that for us, that much is clear.
In light of the growing epidemic of EMF exposure, many new technologies have risen to the forefront, including EMF blockers and phone cases like the Safesleeve, which is FCC lab certified and tested to block up to 99% of harmful EMFs when used correctly.
SafeSleeve produces protective cases for your phones, laptops and tablets, including the one shown to the right, for cell phones, tablets, and laptops. To browse their selection or to purchase (the phone case is less than 60 bucks and is made custom for each type of cell phone, you can click on this link).
