Four Self Limiting Beliefs That Can Hold You Back in Pursuit of Your Best Life

Limiting self beliefs can hold a person back.

One of the most important determining factors of a healthy and happy life is what goes on not necessarily in your outside world, but between your ears.

Our mindsets, beliefs, and emotions make a considerable difference in how we view the world, our potential, and our ability to pursue and obtain our best life.

Recently a therapist and mindset coach that I have been working with, Chris Freer, shared his list of four ‘self limiting beliefs’ on his Facebook page that are absolutely vital to recognize and avoid giving any fuel to in your personal and professional life.

The full list of beliefs can be found on Chris’s Facebook page, Upbeat Life, by clicking on this link.

Self-Limiting Belief Number One: ‘I’m Too Old (Or Young)’

There are plenty of beliefs both limiting and helpful in regards to age.

Society gives us plenty of examples of both.

Tom Brady, the Super Bowl winning quarterback and ex-husband of Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, is a perfect example.

Brady led the New England Patriots to his first Super Bowl at age 24, just his third season in the National Football League and the second season he actually played meaningful snaps on the field.

Brady won his first Super Bowl at the age of 24 years and 184 days old. It was an achievement most NFL fans and pundits didn’t think was possible at his age and experience level — until he accomplished it.

Brady managed to win a record seventh Super Bowl with his just his second NFL team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He accomplished this feat at age 43 years and 188 days old, becoming the oldest starting quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl.

He was the only 40-year-old quarterback to ever accomplish that goal.

The former University of Michigan quarterback also became the oldest to ever win an NFL regular season game at the age of 45 years and 151 days on January 1, 2023.

As someone who turned 40 years old myself in 2023, Brady has been an inspiration for me. I have had aspirations of continuing my athletic career, going on extraordinary adventures, and living my best life deep into my 40s and 50s and beyond, much like Brady has since he turned 40 but on a smaller scale.

When I turned 40, I began feeling down on myself.

A lot of family members became sick, and I had a bout with vertigo in March 2020 because of stress, worry, and other factors.

Self-Limiting Belief Number Two: ‘I Can’t Do This’

There are times when it’s important to push through difficult challenges in your life and times to change your path and do something else.

As the old saying goes, relating to the game of poker, ‘You’ve got to know when to hold them, and know when to fold them.’

Oftentimes in life we get caught up in situations where we are not sure whether we should stay or whether we should go, so to speak, similar to the popular song by the music group The Clash.

Oftentimes, talking with a friend, well wisher, or, preferably, a professional like Coach Chris can help to get to the bottom of which ‘quests,’ paths, challenges, or even ‘side quests’ in life are worth pursuing.

By talking over your difficulties, challenges that seemed impossible suddenly seem a lot more possible.

With the right support, your ‘I Can’t Do This’ attitude can quickly become an ‘I Can Do This’ attitude, which makes all the difference.

Coach Chris is based in the United Kingdom, and I have spoken with him for several months now.

I live in Michigan in the United States and speaking with someone from a different country has been incredibly eye-opening and beneficial for me. Coach Chris is a holistic-minded health and transformation coach who understands the challenges of striving for an ideal and healthy conscious life in a world filled with toxic emotions, toxic food, toxic medicine, and toxic situations.

We often see these toxic situations and items in our lives as mountains to climb but we can also use them as guides, metaphors, or fuel for our journey to a healthier and happier self.

Chris Freer has helped me so much in terms of my outlook and perspective on my thoughts, feelings, emotions, business strategy, and other areas of my life.

Self-Limiting Belief Number Three: ‘I’m Not Good Enough’

This is a belief we all struggle with at various times.

We all pick up this limiting belief from our friends, co-workers, media, adversaries, family, and friends over the course of our lives, among other sources. We see ourselves as not being as good or as qualified or as competent as those we look up to and want to be more like in our lives.

This is a mindset that changes over time as we learn, evolve and grow.

If you’re feeling ‘Not Good Enough’ in any area of your life, visit the UpBeat Life Facebook page to learn more about this and other topics.

Self-Limiting Belief Number Four: ‘I Don’t Have Enough Confidence’

A healthy sense of confidence is another belief that comes in due time through experience and overcoming challenges.

Confidence requires willingness to express what you want and what you need to other people.

Oftentimes we lack confidence out of fear of not getting enough in return or not getting what we wanted. We also may fear being misunderstood, taken advantage of, lied to or disturbed or hurt in other ways.

This is a self-limiting belief that is perhaps the most difficult to flip because of how situational it can be over the course of our lives.
