On July 11, 2019, the California based artificial dairy company Perfect Day released its first product, an ice cream made from genetically modified yeast that was marketed as an “animal free solution” to traditional agriculture.
The synthetic genetically modified milk products were imbued with images and marketing slogans befitting something pure that comes from nature, hiding the true nature of what how the product is made.
The company lent its proprietary 3D printed milk proteins to products like Brave Robot synthetic ice cream and betterland milk before selling them to unsuspecting customers without labels showing they are genetically modified.
Products like Brave Robot were often found in health food stores despite a lack of safety testing and the myriad concerns surrounding genetically modified dairy products.
Recently, two major organic watchdog organizations decided to hold Perfect Day’s feet to the fire as they announced the filing of a lawsuit against the controversial company for allegedly deceptive practices.

The lawsuit was filed in April by GMO Free/Toxin Free USA and the Organic Consumers Association, alleging “material omissions” and “deceptive marketing” by Perfect Day.
The company describes the process by which its milk proteins are made as “precise fermentation,” a phrase hiding significant details about how it is made. The milk proteins are actually made via synthetic biology (synbio) genetic engineering according to the plaintiffs, which hired Health Research Institute (HRI) to analyze the company’s ProFerm product in comparison to natural milk varieties.
“HRI’s findings illustrate that representing ProFerm as the same as cow’s whey or capable of creating milk ‘identical to traditional milk’ is false and misleading,” the two plaintiffs
wrote.
Perfect Day Contains 90+ Unknown GMO Byproducts
The tests found that the GMO milk proteins from Perfect Day are mostly fungal compounds resulting from genetically engineered fermentation processes.
They discovered that only 13.4% of ProFerm is comprised of cow’s whey protein.
Fungal proteins comprised 86.6% of proteins in the synthetic dairy products, 93 of which are not found in cow’s whey proteins.

The tests also found that the fungal proteins and compounds comprising this large percentage of the synthetic dariy products are unknown to science, have never been part of the human diet previously, and come from the genetic modification process.
The sheer amount of GMO compounds suggests that Perfect Day synthetic dairy products may contain more foreign proteins and other substances than any other processed GMO food product in history.
The press release added that ProFerm contains “a fraction of the nutritional value of cow’s milk, missing 69 nutrients and containing no Omega 3 fatty acids or Vitamins B2, B5, and E.
“That a nutritionally devoid substance composed primarily of fungal proteins never before consumed by humans could be labeled cow’s whey is deeply concerning,” wrote GTFU Executive Director Diana Reeves.
“Allowing this aberration into our food supply and classifying it as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) highlights the urgent need to reevaluate our regulatory framework for food,” she added.
