Chicken is one of the United States’ most popular types of meats. It is widely regarded as one of the healthiest meats a person can possibly eat, but as always, the type of chicken that you buy is incredibly important.
There are many facts that the chicken meat industry does not want you to know, which is just part of the reason why labels have changed so often in the last twenty-plus years.
Congress hasn’t always looked out for the consumer, as they oftentimes choose to put profits over health. This approach, common to the United States food industry, has contributed to declining health outcomes among millions of United States residents each year.
With that in mind, here are four things the chicken industry doesn’t want you to know about their products:
1. Most Chickens are Fed GMO Food Pellets-
The vast majority of the chicken industry produces products from chickens fed from genetically modified foodstuffs.
The most popular forms of chicken feed include GMO soy and corn, as over 90 percent of these crops are genetically modified in the United States.

If you purchase so-called “conventional” chicken products, you are almost certainly getting a type of meat from a chicken that was fed GMO pellets instead of being allowed to consume its natural diet.
As the old saying goes, you aren’t just what you eat, you are “what your food eats.” This is why it’s so important to buy organic, pasture-raised and non-GMO chickens. Pasture-raised chickens are allowed to roam outdoors, eating what God intended for them to eat each day.
2. Chickens Grow Unnaturally Fast-
Chickens raised on industrial farms grow fast due to selective breeding. Large corporations want offspring that grow big faster than a traditional chicken.
By using steroids, hormones, and selective breeding, today’s so-called “broiler chickens” grow up disproportionately to the point where they can barely stand up once they reach a certain age in their respective environments.
The growth rate of chickens has been virtually halved since the 1950s, giving rise to an army of unnaturally unhealthy birds in large warehouses.

3. Chickens are Unnaturally Packed in Warehouses-
Chickens are unnaturally crammed into warehouse that are way too small to give them anything resembling a healthy quality of life.
These chickens lounge around in their own filth and waste. They are so close to the other chickens that they can barely flap their wings or move without hitting another chicken.
This leads to the birds becoming more stressed. They release unhealthy stress hormones into their bloodstream over long periods of time which decreases the quality of the meat by the time it makes its way to your kitchen table.
4. Many Farmers are Treated Unfairly-
Many farmers in the chicken industry are treated unfairly by large corporations that specialize in producing GMO-fed, unhealthy birds.
These farmers oftentimes sign contracts that place them on a treadmill of challenges designed to make life tough on the farmer. The end result is that large corporations end up profiting handsomely while farmers are squeezed into what they liken to a life of indentured servitude to the corporations.
Many farmers fail to realize what they’re getting themselves into, as whistleblowers have stated in recent years. They sign contracts that cause extremely difficulties later on as they fail to full understand the legalese fine print found in the contracts they sign.
In 2024, a lawsuit was settled by farmers against the Pilgrim’s Pride corporation. The farmers forced Pilgrim’s Pride to pay $100 million to settle the lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, over what the group of farm worker plaintiffs deemed “overarching conspiracy to suppress compensation paid to broiler farmers nationwide.”
When you purchase from small, organic farmers who raise happy, healthy chickens on pastures the old fashioned way, you are supporting happier, healthier system for chickens, people and planet.
The cost may be a little more up front at times but ultimately the goal is to invest in your health, and the health of all of us, by putting your dollars into something better for everyone to enjoy.
