Over the course of our lives as human beings, there are certain places that “call to us” no matter how far we roam.
For me, one of those places is the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, north of the Mackinaw Bridge on Lake Superior, the largest lake by surface area in the United States and the world.
This past November, I had the opportunity to visit the Keweenaw, near where my grandfather grew up, shortly after the busiest part of the fall foliage tourism season.
The visit was as enchanting as it was surprising as I enjoyed every second, exploring one of the most beautiful places in Michigan and the country as I peeped the colorful autumn leaves, towering Lake Superior waves, mountain vistas, waterfalls and other natural features.
I stayed at one of my new favorite places, the Keweenaw Castle Resort, a ‘Private Paradise’ on the Big Lake that specializes in birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons, team building, weddings, and other special events.
I came away impressed, to say the least.
There is simply no place like this pristine slice of paradise in northern Michigan on Earth, and I can’t wait to return.

Things to Do in the Keweenaw Peninsula (All Seasons)
The Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has things to do in all seasons.
I personally have visited the Upper Peninsula and this region many times during winter, spring, fall, and summer.
During the winter, the residents of the UP, who call themselves ‘Yoopers’ and call the UP ‘God’s Country,’ navigate on snowmobiles as entire towns become a snowmobiler’s paradise.
Moose, bear, wolf, and other wildlife sightings are common and the gentle nature of the locals takes center stage as restaurants and their unique culinary delicacies are enjoyed.
One of the most popular winter destinations is the Mt. Bohemia Ski Resort, which is located less than 30 minutes from the Keweenaw Castle Resort.
Mt. Bohemia was named the Best North American Ski Resort by USA Today 2023, featuring a 900-foot vertical drop and two-mile ski run.
Also popular is one of my favorite places in the world, Brockway Mountain, with panoramic views of Lake Superior.
Copper Harbor is also nearby, offering a delightful peek into a town where life is simpler and more traditional than the norm.
Historic Fort Wilkins Park is also close, as is Hunter’s Point Park with its red rocky and sandy beaches.
Mountain biking trails, several waterfalls, and Estivant Pines Sanctuary, a 508-acre preserve of virgin pine forest round out the area’s notable landmarks.

My Personal Thoughts on Keweenaw Castle Resort, Copper Harbor
My trip to Copper Harbor was one of the best I have made in recent memory.
The Keweenaw Castle Resort is the perfect blend of modern spa-like amenities along with nature and hospitality.
I received a massage in the massage room replete with essential oils and lounged in the hot tub room.
The hot tub at the Keweenaw Resort is the most impressive I’ve seen, with views of the red rock beach and waves of Lake Superior all in a large sunroom type setting.
*****
Keweenaw Castle Resort also partakes in “sauna culture,” a key part of life in the Upper Peninsula where hot saunas are common gathering places among the locals.
My room, the Turret/Signature suite, was incredible.
Copper sinks (this is copper mining country) and bathroom tiles decorated with Yooperlite (glow in the dark) stones were a few of the impressive touches I noticed.
Hammocks dot the property, a large fire pit area is available for entertaining, and sea kayaks are provided for exploring the majestic and rugged shoreline to your heart’s desire.
Hunt for Yooperlite glow-in-the-dark rocks on the beach located just in front of the property.
Lake Superior feels like an ocean here and the brilliant, hiker’s paradise known as Isle Royale (America’s most rustic, oft-praised and least-visited national park on an island in Lake Superior) is just a short ride away by boat or seaplane.
After visiting, I mentally added a return visit to the Keweenaw Castle Resort to my future bucket list.
Special thanks goes out to the team at Keweenaw Castle for allowing me to stay here.
I stocked up on souvenirs and headed back to the Mackinac Bridge and Michigan’s Lower Peninsula after two and a half days, excited to share my story with friends and family.
Thank you so much for reading! until next time,
