One Brand of Rice Gets Worst Score of All For GMO, Chemical Ingredient Concerns

Environmental Working Group Rice scores - Zatarian's gets worst marks of all.

 

Rice is a staple food from the fanciest restaurants to communities where resources including money are scarce.

It is widely regarded as a healthy food, whether for its nutritional value in the case of brown rice to its lack of inflammatory ingredients in organic white rice.

Recently the popular organization the Environmental Working Group decided to rank nearly 50 groupings of rice samples based on whether their ingredients are at risk for toxic GMO and chemical contamination or not.

One of a popular brand’s most exotic flavors got the worst score of all products tested.

 

Zatarain’s Gets Worst Score of All Rice Products 

A product from Zatarain’s, a famous packaged rice company, called ‘Caribbean Rice’ got the worst possible score of all products tested according to the EWG.

The EWG’s scale for product rankings lists ‘1’ as the best score and ’10’ as the worst score.

The Zatarain’s Caribbean rice product scored got an 8.

Among the concerns with this product are the following according to EWG:

-High concern for toxic ingredients:

Zatarain’s Caribbean rice scored in the ‘orange’ section for potentially toxic ingredients just outside of ‘red’ territory.

-Medium processing concern: 

Zatarain’s carries a concern for processed ingredients.

-Salt Concern

This type of rice is high in salt that likely comes from processed table salt which could contain toxic chemicals and pieces of microplastics.

-Arsenic concern: 

Rice that is not prepared in traditional ways (more info here) may contain arsenic, a toxic chemical to which exposure should be limited.

According to the EWG, Zatarain’s Caribbean rice contains the following ingredients that may be genetically engineered or derived from genetically modified foods:

-Tamari

-Sugars

-Soybeans

-Citric Acid
