Product Review: The Best Chaga Mushroom Tea and Soda I Have Ever Tried

Charlie' Chaga makes incredible teas and sodas with the Chaga mushroom.

The Chaga mushroom is known by its nicknames ‘The King of Mushrooms,’ ‘Nature’s Gold,’ and ‘The Diamond of the Forest,’ and if you’ve ever foraged for it in the woods or consumed it you probably know that it lives up to the hype.

Chaga mushroom offers countless health benefits and has been prized for its medicinal properties for thousands of years.

I personally have been taking it for over a decade now and recently discovered a company that makes the finest Chaga mushroom products I have ever tried: Charlie’s Chaga, which is based out of Westport, Connecticut.

The following are my honest impressions of two of the best Chaga products I have ever tried in my life: Charlie’s Chaga Soda Syrup and Charlie’s Chaga Chaga Tea.

Charlie’s Chaga: How Does It Taste?

For years I have consumed Chaga tea direct from nature, wondering all along about how I could make it taste better. Chaga mushrooms look like giant chunks of burnt charcoal and grow on birch trees in northern climates ranging from Canada to Minnesota, Michigan, New Hampshire, Russia, Siberia and beyond.

The taste is as Earthy and at times bitter as any mushroom I’ve ever tried. Charlie’s Chaga went beyond this typical mushroom taste with the most subtly sweet, delicious and rich Chaga tea I’ve ever tried.

The Charlie’s Chaga tea product (find it here) contains just three ingredients: Natural spring water, wild-harvested chaga and Vitamin C. It is sold in 16-ounce bottles and is ready to drink from the get-go.

All things considered this is the best Chaga tea I’ve ever had. It comes ready to drink and is bursting with health benefits (more on that later). The subtle sweetness of the Chaga is something I’ve never experienced before. If you don’t mind a slightly sweet, Earthy taste in your health tonics you will love this drink

I also consumed a few bottles of the Charlie’s Chaga Soda Syrup which also comes in 16-ounce glass bottles.

This particular drink knocked it out of the park. There’s not much more I can say than that. This Chaga soda is delicious and perfectly blends the aforementioned ingredients plus Grade A Maple Syrup, Organic Cherries, Ginger, Organic Lime Juice, and Vanilla Extract along with spices.

The result tastes something like a ridiculously health all-natural and organic Dr. Pepper, like a health tonic from years gone that far exceeds anything you will find in the soda section of the local grocery store. This stuff has just the right amount of sweetness and mixes well in water or sparkling water for a health tonic that will have you feeling like a million bucks in no time flat.

Charlie’s Chaga Health Benefits and Sustainable Practices

Chaga mushroom is rich in potassium and other nutrients and is anti-cancer. In this case, Charlie’s Chaga is slow-cooked and blended to ensure as much of the Chaga essence is distilled into Charlie’s health tonics.

The company’s founder notes on its website that sustainability is a major focus of the company as well.

“We feel that Chaga is a gateway mushroom to learn about fungi and the ecosystem,” the website reads. “It is a unique and powerful gift that shouldn’t be overharvested.

“We make sure our suppliers are using the most sustainable techniques and we encourage forest regrowth strategies.”

Health benefits-wise, the biggest benefit to me personally that I have noticed is how it supercharges my energy levels. Chaga mushroom contains polysaccharides that boost energy and alleviate fatigue throughout the day.

According to David ‘Avocado’ Wolfe, a well known superfoods researcher, this ‘King of the Mushrooms’ has the highest potassium content of any mushroom or herbal remedy. I have not found research to corroborate Mr. Wolfe’s boast over the years but I remember hearing him say it in a video on his YouTube channel and have since added Chaga to my supplement routine with amazing results, as potassium is a mineral I often find myself deficient in.

Charlie’s Chaga products are gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free and contain no refined sugar, just maple syrup and organic fruit juices. They are true health tonics that boost antioxidant (disease protective) levels in the body, and are incredible for skin health because of the dark melanin pigments contained within each mushroom drink.

Chaga mushroom is also an adaptogen which enhances serotonin, a mood regulation chemical in the brain.

After trying several different brands of wild-harvested Chaga I really cannot recommend Charlie’s Chaga enough. They do everything the old fashioned way and have a wide range of creative and incredibly healthy products, including Chaga chunks for making tea on the stove at home.

Special thanks to Charlie’s Chaga for providing me samples for the purposes of this review.
