Six Natural Substances That Help Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier

Certain natural ingredients help to repair a natural skin barrier, these are a few of the best ones to try or take in foods or supplements

The aging of skin typically begins in the mid-20s and continues into the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

It happens naturally depending on a wide variety of factors.

Visible signs of again can be mitigated with the nutrients and lifestyle changes. Recently, a primary care physician shared information on an ingredient found in citrus fruits that helps to change signs of aging. Three nutrients that work synergistically with Vitamin C to heal the body’s cells, skin, and other build blocks were also shared.

To support healthy skin and skin cells, consider adding the following nutrients to your food and supplementation routine.

1. Ceramides- Ceramides are not discussed often in terms of their presence in food. Most people know them through name brand skin creams that are loaded with preservatives and synthetic ingredients.

Ceramides are fats and lipids in skin cells that make up a large percentage of the epidermis, aka the outer layer of human skin (the term is also used to describe the outer layer of plant skin).

Foods high in ceramides include sweet potatoes, organic corn, brown rice and grass-fed, non-GMO and organic dairy products.

2. Squalene- A nutrient found in oils such as organic olive oil, squalene prevents the loss of moisture from skin. It keeps the skin supple and hydrated while reducing inflammation.

It is also found in pumpkin seed oil, amaranth oil, and and sunflower oil among other seed oils. While the use of seed oils has become controversial in recent years, eating them in their organic and non-GMO, most natural states is the best way to prevent any potential negative effects.

Consult a doctor before adding them to your routine in a consistent way if you have any questions or concerns.

3. Peptides- Peptides are amino acid chains found naturally in food. They are most famously present in supplements like collagen protein, the most abundant protein found in the body.

Good food sources include bone broth (this is the one I use in my morning coffee or chocolate drinks), berries, oranges, lemons, limes, and similar fruits, as well as wild-caught fish and pasture-raised and beef (On Sale here).

4. Stem Cells- Most people know stem cells from their medical applications using cells from non-food sources. Stem cells are also retained within our bodies from a young age and are activated through compounds found in food, according to the work of Dr. William Li, MD.

Learn more about stem cell activation through food in this article, or in Dr. Li’s book ‘Eat to Beat Disease: The Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself.’

5. Probiotics- Adding probiotics to your routine in the form of supplements, kombucha, fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi, and more can all help to improve your microbiome.

By doing so, you will support improved and enhanced absorption of the foods you eat and the nutrients contained within, restoring your body’s ability to heal itself and the skin cells contained within.

I personally like this probiotic the best and have taken it often over the years.

It is also worth noting that the gut microbiome varies greatly from person-to-person, society-to-society, culture-to-culture and even tribe-to-tribe among indigenous peoples across the world.

The microbiome necessary to live, survive and thrive is individually tailored to each specific environment and the study of the microbiomes of different cultures, the complexity and health characteristics they provide is still relatively unknown and underdeveloped.

For more information on choosing the right probiotic for you, consult a naturopathic doctor or scientific lab that specializes optimizing the health of your gut microbiome.
