Avocadoes are one of the healthiest foods at any given health food store or supermarket, rich in healthy fats, minerals, vitamins and fiber.

The avocado industry has expanded in recent years as the popularity of the fatty fruit has grown. Meanwhile, Biotech companies have sought to capitalize on the growing trend of avocado eating by genetically engineering the fruits to “not spoil,” a questionable endeavor that organic advocates have fought back against.

Recently, news broke that four avocado companies have been sued by the well known Organic Consumers Association non-profit organization, a move that was made in response to scrutiny and subsequent allegations over the industry allegedly causing serious problems in Mexican avocado growing communities.

United States Avocado Importers Sued by OCA

The lawsuit originally happened in 2024 and has just now hit the mainstream news cycle.

The OCA, located in Findland, Minnesota, filed lawsuits against four of the biggest avocado importers: Calavo, Mission, Fresh Del Monte and West Pak.

The companies have been importing avoados from Mexico and supplying them to supermarket chains in the United States of America including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Walmart.

According to the OCA, the companies’ websites and social media claimed their fruits were sourced responsibly, but those claims were determined to be untrue.

The OCA’s case against the West Pak grower was dropped after the company “challenged marketing claims and (agreed) to employ enhanced due diligence mechanisms to identify and stop sourcing from orchards in Mexico identified as existing on land that has been deforested since January 1, 2018.”

“The impact of avocado farming is a carefully guarded secret that the companies conceal with elaborate greenwashing,” Alexis Baden-Mayer, the political director of OCA, said.

Del Monte attempted to have the suit dismissed, but it was allowed to proceed in February 2025.
